There is Sahara dust floating over Florida Bay this week. The Upper Keys are roasting with heat indices well over 100 degrees every day. By the way, I was on vacation when all this SAL discussion heated up. What is SAL anyway?

SAL = Saharan Air Layer

#6 Postby Weatherboy1 » Sat Jul 17, 2004 8:12 am

Essentially, if you get a strong enough Azores high to the NW of the African continent, Saharan dirt and dust can get swept up into the atmosphere via easterly winds. That dust then gets carried into the tropics and across the Atlantic, helping to dry the atmosphere in the main development region for tropical storms. This inhibits tropical storm formation.

There's a place where you can monitor SAL conditions. Here's the link:

My Satellite Guru at WxChat.com has a program that will produce images of this magnitude. Rik Wessels is his name and he is the admin of pro-weather.com
