From the Fox News Website

Wednesday, March 26, 2003

WASHINGTON — Iraq has executed prisoners of war, the Pentagon's No. 2 general said Wednesday night as he listed a series of what he called unprecedented Iraqi violations of the laws of war.

Marine Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, apparently was referring to some of the U.S. Army troops captured Sunday by Iraqi forces in the city of An Nasiriyah. Iraqi state television later showed video footage of five living POWs and the bodies of at least five U.S. soldiers.

Defense officials who have viewed the tape have said privately that several of the bodies had execution-style gunshot wounds to their heads.

Intelligence officials have received one uncorroborated report indicating that at least some of the dead soldiers had been captured alive and executed in public, a senior Pentagon official said Wednesday on condition of anonymity. The information -- which did not come from an intercepted communication, as the New York Times reported Wednesday -- is of undetermined reliablility, the official said.

Pace, in a televised interview, said Iraqis had engaged in many atrocities in the six days since the war began.

"They have executed prisoners of war. ... They have used women and children as human shields and they have pretended to surrender and then opened fire," Pace said. "I've never seen anything like this. It's disgusting."

Pentagon officials said Wednesday the International Committee of the Red Cross still had not been granted access to the five Army soldiers captured Sunday and the two Army helicopter pilots captured a day later. All seven were questioned in front of Iraqi video cameras and the tapes were later played on Iraqi television -- which U.S. officials say violated Geneva Convention prohibitions on subjecting POWs to public humiliation.

The first group of Army soldiers captured were part of a maintenance convoy which made a wrong turn in the south-central Iraqi town of An Nasiriyah on Sunday and was attacked by Iraqi forces. Of that unit, the Army says, two soldiers are confirmed dead, five are confirmed as prisoners of war and eight are missing.

Pentagon officials say the prisoners thought to have been executed are among the eight formally listed as missing. Final determinations that they are dead and how they were killed can only happen once the bodies are located, officials said.

WOW Sunny... Thanks.

Yes I have only been here for going on 3 years, but it is my home now, and I love it with all my heart and all the people.

My whole family and I were all born in South Africa.

I was aware of several American POW's that were definitely executed after being ambushed/ taken prisoner last Sunday (I saw the gruesome photos on Al Jazeera); but cannot find information anywhere tonight that any of the others have been.

I sincerely hope it's not true. One of the brave young Apache helicopter pilots shot down and captured grew up here in Douglas county...Ron Young, Jr.

According to AP, there is at least one female American POW and two other young American servicewomen now missing. I truly fear for their safety, and grieve for their loved ones

CAPTURED:
March 24:
Army Spc. Shoshana Johnson, 30, Fort Bliss, Texas

MISSING:
March 23:
Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch, 19, Palestine, W.Va.

Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, 22, Tuba City, Ariz.

Well i say its time to take off the gloves! This needs to come to a quick end no matter the means! We cannot let this go on. After the rest of the world see this if they havent already im sure they wont have much too say. And if they do then screw them. Its time we show our might and what we are made of and what we can do when our gloves come off. Plus i think it would deter anyone else from doing such a thing again to any American!

This is from CNN...I cant' believe that Saddam would stoop that low! That's execution style!

Top U.S. official: Iraq has executed some POWs

Thursday, March 27, 2003 Posted: 12:23 AM EST (0523 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Iraq has executed some prisoners of war in what the Pentagon's No. 2 general described Wednesday as one of many "disgusting" war crimes committed by forces loyal to Saddam Hussein.

"They have executed prisoners of war," said Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in an interview on CNN's "Larry King Live."

Pace did not elaborate. Earlier in the day, Pentagon sources told CNN they were looking into a report that Iraqi soldiers shot dead seven U.S. Army soldiers as they were surrendering with their hands up Sunday.

Iraqi television showed video of five U.S. soldiers in custody after their capture Sunday and the bodies of at least five other soldiers who had bullet wounds to their foreheads. Iraq has since taken two U.S. Apache helicopter pilots captive and shown video of them.

To the families of the prisoners of war, Pace said the U.S. military is doing "everything we can to locate and free their sons and their daughters."

"I don't know what to say to them that could help ease their pain. I can't imagine what they're going through," he said of the families. "We all hope and pray that this war can end quickly so that we can repatriate POWs."

General: Iraqis hang woman for waving to coalition troops
The Marine general said that what has surprised him most about the first week of fighting is the extent of war crimes carried out by the Iraqi regime. In addition to the execution of POWs, he said, Iraqis have used civilians as human shields, stored weapons in schools, set up command posts in hospitals and pretended to surrender only to open fire.

In one case, an Iraqi woman was hanged after she waved to coalition forces, Pace said.

"I've never seen anything like this," he said. "To do it so blatantly so early, not only is it a surprise, but to me it's disgusting."

Earlier, the International Committee of the Red Cross said its teams in Baghdad and Kuwait are negotiating over access to Iraqi and U.S. prisoners of war. But to date, their teams have not had contact with the prisoners. Pace said coalition forces have captured more than 4,000 Iraqi soldiers. (Full story)

The seven known U.S. prisoners of war are:

-- U.S. Army Spec. Joseph Hudson, 24, of the 507th Maintenance Company. He and four others were taken prisoner Sunday after their convoy was ambushed by Iraqi forces in southern Iraq.

-- U.S. Army Pfc. Patrick Miller, 23, of the 507th Maintenance Company.

-- U.S. Army Spec. Shoshana Johnson, 30, of the 507th Maintenance Company.

-- U.S. Army Spec. Edgar Hernandez, 21, of the 507th Maintenance Company.

-- U.S. Sgt. James Riley, 31, of the 507th Maintenance Company.

-- U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer David S. Williams, 30, of Florida.

-- U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Ronald D. Young, 26, of Georgia.

Williams and Young were both in an Apache helicopter when it went down Monday near Karbala, about 60 miles southwest of Baghdad. The Pentagon has said a search-and-rescue operation was launched immediately after their helicopter was lost, but it had to be called off due to heavy Iraqi fire in the area.
