Wasn't Alex supposed to be turning out to sea by now? Everytime I've looked at the radar since yesterday, it seems like she's moving almost due North. We've been getting rain here in Atlantic City and it's from the far northern outer bands of Alex.

When was the last time a hurricane developed off of the Bahamas/SE US coast?

How will they classify Alex?

#866 Postby Pebbles » Tue Aug 03, 2004 11:30 am

If Alex's eye never actually goes over Hatteras and Hatteras only rides the eyewall the whole way they won't classify that as 'landfalling' right? I dunno but to me that wording would almost make it seem as if Alex had no affect on U.S. What do you all think?

phone calls from Hatteras

#867 Postby ncweatherwizard » Tue Aug 03, 2004 11:30 am

I've made a few phone calls down to the cape.

Winds are around 35 to 40mph with furniture blowing around.
Very heavy rain.
Flooding not yet a problem...however, ocean has reached the dunes but no farther.
No power in Buxton--winds out of the east.

Hatteras Village reporting winds around 40mph, with gusts up to hurricane force, and blinding rain.

I'll try to keep working the phones a little more, but some places I can't get up with.

Eye must cross a landmass for "landfall".
Curiously, this was hotly debated in nearly the exact location with Gustav '02.

Looks like the eyewall stayed off shore and the weak side of the storm was not so bad.

Ok so what is the actually classifying of landfall? The exact center of the 'eye' going over land or the edge of the 'eyewall' (where they winds die down and everything becomes calm) passes over land?

Exactly, the problem isnt the winds, but the eyewall coming so close makes for a HUGE beach erosion problem, Derecho i guess you havent been to the OBX and seen what the beaches look like since Isabel? Well I have and i can tell you that my fear since i was there, was another hurricane hitting them. Id say it IS as bad as people are making it out to seem.

Latest radar shows that Hatteras Village got the full "thickness" of the northwest eyewall (notice that the decrease in rainfall associated with the fringes of the eye itself is touching the island). While Recon. may confirm no sustained hurricane force winds here, the highest radar dbz values of the entire hurricane's core are currently right over Hatteras island. This will result in very effective transport of flight level winds down to the surface. Extremely rainy, extremely gusty, with direct onshore flow.

Does the NHC consider this a landfall? I think so....MGC
