Ain't that sweet!!! Definitely some great satellite presentation of a category 2 hurricane. I just got a report of 72 mph sustained with 102 mph gusts in the Cape Hatteras area. I was getting sustained wind reports of 80 mph and soundside storm surge flooding highway 12 with 5 feet of water in spots. Also got reports of homes flooded, and power out all over the Hatteras Island area.

3:30 PM EDT Storm2k Update on Alex,TD#2

#1026 Postby cycloneye » Tue Aug 03, 2004 2:24 pm

Hurricane Alex is moving NE pararell to the coastline of NC brushing the outer banks near Cape Hatteras.Winds are at 100 mph making it a cat 2 hurricane.Rainbands in sqalls will continue to move inland in the NC coast in the comming hours while Alex moves away from the coast.Rip currents are the main concern with also high tides.Rainfall in the amounts of between 2-4 inches may fall when all is set and done.Alex will move out of the coastline by tonight and the weather will be improving in the coast by then.

TD#2 this afternoon continues to organize slowly as it moves 280 west at around 20 mph.Watches and warnings may be posted later today and tonight for portions of the lesser antilles.Rainbands in squalls will reach the islands by tonight but the axis center of the system will go thru the island chain tommorow morning. The enviroment continues to be favorable for the TD to get stronger and a tropical storm may form later this afternoon or evening.Al interests in the lesser antilles, the Virgin islands,Puerto Rico and Hispanola should pay attention to the local officials in case any evacuations take place.

The storm2k forecast team will monitor the progress of Alex and TD#2 or Bonnie in the future and will post any changes.

An update... Duck Research Pier reports NNE winds sustained at 38-knots... with gusts to 43-knots. For our knot-challenged friends, that's 44-mph sustained with 49-mph gusts.

Most people around Thursday or Friday doubted that it would become a storm at all. I was one of those that thought it would stay a moderate TS.

On this map, it sure looks like the eye went over that tiny little white part of the Outer Banks.

Derek,

Are you using "hit" to infer landfall?

When I saw that intense northern eyewall heading into hatteras I knew there would be some gusts near 100mph. Looks like I was right, hope there's not too much damage  .
