Would you take the SmallPox Vacinne?

#1 Postby azsnowman » Fri Mar 28, 2003 12:04 pm

With a second health care professinal dying from a heart attack *possibly* from the smallpox vaccine, would you take it? Myself, I don't think so, they've stated that individuals over the age of 40 are at risk of heart failure. I've got high blood pressure, my cholestral is a little high, so I *think* I would be one of those at risk. This may be a crude answer BUT...if the Good Lord wants you Home, He'll take you no matter what you do, so why push the envelope so to speak?

If my doctor recommended I take it, then I would.

In recent days, the question has been raised, if you don't know about any underlaying heart conditions, would you take it? I'm 43 with the conditions listed above so I know I would be at risk, I don't know.....damned if you do, damned if you don't!

I agree with chad and bfez...if the President of the United States and/or my doctor says I need it, I guess I better listen.

Yeah Dennis, your situation is different. :(

I actually think I have had one (better ask my mommy to make sure)

Small pox killed so many native people in Africa, it was horriffic. I think they were still giving the vac's when I was born.

I agree though, if the president says do it. It should be done.

Ever since it's been made available there has been plenty of discussion about the risks of the vaccine. I think I would hold out until it looks like it was absolutely necessary.

You're right Chad - but this one is relatively new (to us) compared to the measles and rubela vaccines.

I actually work in the vaccine division of a major Pharmaceutical drug company. So I would certainly take the vaccine if needed.

Your right chad, every vaccine has it's draw backs, some more so than others. NOW....didn't most of us receive small pox vaccines before we started grammar school? Seems to me we did

If the smallpox vaccine is the one that they prick your arm with a bunch of little needle marks then i have had it still see the scar. Of course I am one of the older ones here so if i took it when i started school that was 45 yrs ago

And if the President said my kids needed it they would have it

I would if it seemed prudent. My current personal risk assessment indicates that I'd have a greater risk of dying in a car crash on the way to the doctor's than contracting small pox. That could change.

Also, I thought that the majority of smallpox victims actually survive.

I remember getting my smallpox vaccine when I entered 1st grade - like Bre said - I still have my scar from it.

I would have to weigh the pro's and con's. Lets hope its never comes to this point.

I remember the test with the little needles, but I thought that was for TB. The other one that leaves a big scar on a person's shoulder I think was for tetanus??? I could be way off base here. I remember getting the rubela and measles shots in grammar school, at the school itself.
