An eye-opener for me!

#1 Postby StormCrazyIowan » Fri Mar 28, 2003 12:41 pm

I have recently joked that I wasn't afraid of terrorist attacks here in Iowa becuase "they don't even know Iowa exists", but I don't think I will be saying that anymore! Earlier this morning, our Interstate 74 Bridge leading from Iowa into Illinois (approx. 10 miles from my house) was shut down, and the Bomb Squad was called in, due to a "suspicious" tanker sitting in the parking lot of Isle Of Capri casino right under the bridge! From what I have seen on the news, the bridge is back open and the Bomb Squad is gone, but something like that occuring so close to home kinda tells me not to be stupid, it could happen anywhere!

Wow Jacki.

People should never have the attitude of "it cant and wont happen to me" These vile people dont care who they hurt. Not to say we should all live in fear, but I think keeping an open eye on our surroundings helps. The more eyes looking the less chance of something suspicious going un-noticed.

Yeah Jacki...it could happen anywhere!

I have personally thought another attack would likely happen somewhere outside of New York/DC/Los Angeles, etc. I figured they would go where they thought they would have the best chance of pulling one off, probably outside the larger cities with so much protection.

I hope I'm wrong and we don't see one at all. Thank God we keep arresting terrorists left and right.

Stay alert......wherever you live!!

Amanzi, I agree with what you say, but when you grew up in times of peace, it is hard to get a grip on reality sometimes. I take our present circumstances seriously, but only being 32, I don't know times of trouble like we have now. It may take a while to get used to, but I hope someday we get back the innocence we once had.

You are right stromraiser. It is inbred in me. I grew up in a place with daily unrest. I kind of sleep with one eye open. It is natural for me. Consider yourself blessed to have had 32 years of peace. It truly is something that I hope my son will have. As for getting back to innocence, I doubt that will ever happen. These attacks will be in the back of peoples minds for generations to come. But being aware is not always a bad thing.

stormraiser, I too am afraid that our innocence is gone forever, to pinpoint the exact day when it was taken away is hard, was is that fatal day of Sept 11th 2001, was is Desert Storm? I don't know but as Amanzi said, this will be in the minds of generations to come. We will only see peace when our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ returns to restore the peace we all have come to know and love so much.

Jacki... I know what you mean. I find myself joking and asking what they would want to hit in SW Missouri, but it really isn't a joking matter. However, the dark humor is not unpurposeful. People in stressful jobs such as the media, cops, paramedics, etc. have used this humor to allow them to cope with tragic situations everyday. So...in a way it is healthy.

Paradise/Innocence Lost. Yeah we've gone passed the point of no return as far as that goes. When did that happen. Not sure exactly...probably when that Eve bit the apple :o But the good news is we don't have to carry worry around; like azsnowman sez, the tribulation will come, and the truth will be revealed. Hey Amanzi! Sorry to hear you had a rough go off it early on; me too! But life is good today :D I went to school with a girl named Bronwyn when I lived in Buffalo. You don't hear that name too often anymore. Enjoy your day. The weather done south in Palm Bay is gorgeous, bout 82 and sunny! Have a great one. 8)

Well, I am young, so I can say without a doubt that my innocence was taken on September 11th. It was like being ripped away from childhood and being forced to grow up in the snap of a finger, like it or not! But hey, that is life, just gotta make do the best you can, and that is what I was doing, cracking a joke about it because it makes me uneasy and I refuse to live like that! But from now on I'll just have to remember that nowhere is safe, and just continue to live with it the best I can, don't have much of a choice.....

Very wise words Jacki. I feel the same way about my innocence. It was stolen 9-11-01.

On 9/11 we were "scorned forever". America will never be the same. Just take a look around this country . We are spending millions maybe even billions on tighter security. We will feel "insecure" for a long, long time if not forever. What a crying shame.

I posted this morning in "my boss just emailed me this"

THE D.A..PEOPLE WERE IN TOUCH WITH THE SHERIFFS DEPT. BECAUSE THEY WERE NOTICING A LOT OF FLUREY BY THE POLICE AT COURT. HE WAS TOLD THAT AT NUNMAKER YACHTS A 45' SEARAY WAS PURCHASED OVER THE PHONE BY A GENTLMAN FROM MIAMI. HE ASKED NUNMAKER TO MAKE IT READY FOR THE TRIP BACK TO FLORIDA. WHEN THE MAN ARRIVE YESTERDAY(THURSDAY) AT NUNMAKER HE PAID CASH FOR THE BOAT. $250.000.00. NUNMAKER BECAME SUSPICIOUS BECAUSE THE TWO MEN WERE FORIEGNERS. THE TRANSACTION TOOK PLACE AND THE MEN. LEFT THE BOAT. BECAUSE THERE WAS SOME PAPERWORK NOT YET COMPLETED. THEY(NUNMAKE) RETURNED THAT AFTER-
NOON TO THE BOAT TO SEE THE MEN. WHEN THEY ARRIVED, THEY FOUND THE TWO MEN GUTTING THE BRAND NEW BOAT. NUNMAKE LEFT AND CALLED THE SHERIFF, THEY CALLED THE F.B.I. NO MORE THAN 40 MINIUTES LATER,TWO HELOCOPTERS FROM BILOXI LOADED WITH F.B.I AGENTS LANDED AT MARINA DEL REY,ARRESTED THE TWO MEN,. A TRUCK SHOWED UP NEXT AND THE WHOLE BOAT,ALL IT CONTENTS WERE HOISTED AND LOADED ONTO IT AND DROVE OFF. NOT A WORD WAS EXPLAINED TO THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES. THE SHERIFF DID SAY THAT NEW ORLEANS WAS
A "HIGH" PRIORITY TARGET FOR TERRORESTS. ST. TAMMANY NOW HAS TWO FULLTIME BOATS WITH POLICE ABOARD, RUNNING BACK AND FORTH WATCHING THE CAUSEWAY.

The Causeway is a 25 mi long bridge that connects New Orleans to the N. Shore.

Yeah, I read that too, and not even half an hour later I found out the same thing was happening here! It's really too bad we have to live like this!

Well, I'm not sure if the Bootheel would be worth the effort...If God wanted to give this planet an enema, HERE is where He'd put the plunger.

But the morning I lost my innocence was April 19, 1995....

As horrifying as the events of September 11th were (including the death of one of my sister's best friends), the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City was what awakened me too just how evil some people had become....how dangerous it was becoming in America.

Add the fact it occurred in Oklahoma City...in the heartland, far away from New York City, Washington, or Los Angeles...and it was absolutely terrifying to me. On September 11, 2001 I sat and watched in stunned silence; but on April 19, 1995...I was in total panic...realizing my little sister and her husband both worked in the Merrill Lynch office building in downtown Jackson, Mississippi--directly across the street from that city's huge Federal Building (they sometimes ate lunch in the restaurant atop the Federal Building

If Timothy McVeigh had chosen the Federal Building in Mississippi instead of Oklahoma....there's a very good chance my sister and her husband would have both died that morning....my niece would have become an orphan at 3 months of age; and neither of my nephews would have ever been born

-----------------------------------

No place in America is safe from terrorism. In fact, a savvy terrorist group would target "middle America"...maybe even cities with less than 100,000 population. In my honest opinion, a "dirty" bomb or nerve gas attack in downtown areas of such cities as Des Moines (IA), Dayton (OH), Austin (TX), Portland (OR), Tulsa (OK), or Knoxville (TN) would 1) kill thousands of innocent people; 2) be far more likely to succeed due to the element of surprise; and 3) totally terrorize Mr and Mrs Suburbia--even more than 9/11 did.

Few of us live in lower Manhattan or near the Pentagon....but most of us visit suburban shopping malls, outdoor fairs/ festivals, and little league baseball games--because we feel safe away from the big cities....which makes us very vunerable.
