A Funny Storm Update

#1 Postby michaelwmoss » Sat Aug 07, 2004 10:10 pm

Look at the predicted size of the hail:

SEVERE WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PUEBLO CO
522 PM MDT SAT AUG 7 2004

A TORNADO WARNING CONTINUES UNTIL 545 PM MDT FOR...

KIOWA COUNTY.

NO RECENT TORNADO REPORTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED WITH THIS STORM...
HOWEVER THIS STORM HAS A HISTORY OF PRODUCING A TORNADO. THERE IS
STILL RAPID ROTATION WITH THIS STORM.

THE STORM WHICH HAS HAD A LONG HISTORY OF PRODUCING MULTIPLE
TORNADOES WAS LOCATED 5 MILES EAST OF ARLINGTON.

IF YOU ARE IN THE PATH OF THIS THUNDERSTORM EXPECT A POSSIBLE
TORNADO AND HAIL UP TO THE SIZE OF HENS EGGS.

I've been hit by some pea sized hail, and that hurt pretty bad. I've read in a meteorology textbook that golf ball sized hail can come down at an average speed of around 75 mph. Now thats definatly hurting something.

I am just very fortunate that it did not hit me in the back of the head!!! Not to mention when the hail was coming down, there were wind gusts of about 65-70 mph!!

I found the chart that I had previously talked about. Terminal Velocities of Hailstones:

Radius(cm).......Velocity(mph)
.1.......................13
1.......................44
2.......................62
3.......................77
3.5.....................88
