This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Did Alex actully make it to Major status? I thought he only made it to Cat2 for some reason...

Yes, Alex reached 120 mph(111 mph is a Cat 3) last Tuesday Night.

To answer the question, I can't remember ONE season. If it's happened, it's been YEARS(and I mean a LOT of years).

Yes. Alex was a major hurricane with 120 mph winds, and was the most intense major hurricane to form so far north in the Atlantic Basin.

Those names in 1950 were just a generic alpha way of naming them.

An update today 5:30pm:

It looks like the situation described here might not totally relate to this year. Now that Bonnie formed from the Gulf of Mexico system, we might not compare this year with others that had the first 2 systems becoming majors. It lost its relevance, IMO. I don't think Bonnie has a chance of becoming a Cat 2 hurricane, much less a major hurricane.

Stormchaser, those numbers are in knots. 100 knots = 115 M.P.H.

In 1980, hurricane Allen reached cat-5 status (190 mph/ 899 mb). The next named storm was hurricane Bonnie. Bonnie was also a major hurricane, peaking at 115 mph (960 mb).
