If Bonnie were to rapidly intensify to a major hurricane (which is IMO unlikely), it would be much closer in size to hurricane 1975's Eloise as compared to Opal (both were landfalling major Fla panhandle hurricanes).

If I remember right, Opal enveloped more area but had a very tight core. When passing south and southeast of New Orleans (at it's peak), the diameter of the eye was 8 to 10 NM wide.

Certainly looking a bit better organized. Are there still any dry pockets out in the middle GOM?

Opal had a very small inner eyewall when at peak intensity (916 mb), but even then hurricane force winds were extending out from the center 85 miles to the east....and tropical storm force winds 230 miles east of the center.

In terms of envelope, Opal was much closer in size to TD 3 than TS Bonnie.

My local met said that we probably won't be dealing with Bonnie, but that things could get interesting next weekend with possible Charley. Of course, living along the Gulf Coast there is an old saying that I firmly believe in - "Never turn your back to the water." Anything in the GOM bears watching.

Redder, I don't think we (Tex/La) have much to worry about with Bonnie. She may tease us, but that's about it.
