mellow out
Seems like alot of people are freakin out. That wont help. Another thing I think we ought to do is to not download those streams from the NHC. Seems like we have a potential overload situation. I tried to do Charlie in a loop it is taking forever. Let the pros do the work images are good enough.

If that's too slow...go to the GHCC and get the pics. They are better (and more up to date) anyway.

Most of the time the bandwidth the government has on the internet is used about 1-5%, and yet NOAA always dies whenever there is a big hurricane event.
The White House needs to put together an oversight team that determines who in government gets how much bandwidth when. AFAIC, during a hurricane event there should be a pretty high priority for the NHC and the other pertinent parts of NOAA to get as much bandwidth as they need in order to keep up with the demand.
/end rant.

drive safely too
Drive safely too. People turn into madmen while evacuating. William Grey said along time ago dont build near the beaches and one day we will pay. No one has listened. Thank god our building codes here in Fl improved after Andrew. One worry I got I heard Joe B says a Cat 3 is possible.

Here in E.Cent. Fl we had a whole bunch of drill evacuating the barrier islands. It is a joke. Bumper to bumper craziness. And to top it off the worst storm I have been in was Irene which they did not call for evacuations. Unless we are in the right front quandrant of Charlie I believe it wont be too bad unless it turns into a monster cat 3 or 4

Well, that's all fine and good that "it won't be too bad" for you. But not everyone here is located in the same part of FL as you. And it just might hit them in the wrong way.
No need to mellow out. Prepare, pack, and, if needed, haul arse, I say!

Thanks AFM. That's a cool link. And it is much faster!

nystate- it all depends on the storm, the city, and where you are in regards to landfall.
I would ride out a slow moving cat1 storm in Houston- but I'm 60 miles off the coast and I'd expect to see TS force winds and some bad flooding- all of which I can handle from my high ground. A fast moving Cat 1 that might fling hurricane force winds that far north would make me think twice about hanging around.
My husband wouldn't allow me to stay for a Cat2+- storm chasing or not- slow or fast. The potential for damage in our city is just too high- and we have family who would put us up for as long as we needed deep inland.
Some people ride out Cat3's... it all depends.

The reason I ask is because I rode out Fran in '96, but was all the way in Fayetteville, NC so it was probably a good deal weaker there than it was when it made landfall on the coast. Even so, the damage was substantial, and a major inconvenience, but I never felt like I was in danger.
