I have relatives on their way to International Falls today!

So I'm just a little bummed. They've all packed cool weather clothing but looking at the forecast for International Falls, something tells me they probably don't have enough warm wx clothing items! This group, 10 in all, just left our annual family reunion in southern KY, and drove to Illinois, stopping overnight and then on up to International Falls today. I heard about this trip the entire reunion weekend. I also heard a collective gasp when I said - oh I would love to see International Falls in the winter! I definitely got a reaction when I said that! LOL Anyways, I didn't try to explain I'm into wx and did they all realize how unique International Falls really is? I'd just smile and feel envious.

Just thought I'd share this today. Now I'm sort of glad I'm home in Cincy, still doing laundry from the reunion, and not traveling again so soon. But on the other hand - it is INTERNATIONAL FALLS they're all going to. I swear no one in this family (25 people plus) get's it. So I knew you all would GET IT. Hence, this silly topic. he he

I hope to go up there someday, and since I'm already in northern Iowa I'm not to far away. It'll be one of those trips when for college break next year...haha...but your right, it looks like its a great place!!!

I just knew you guys would get it!!! Wow, look at those lows Eric. I hope they're ready for brrrrr type weather! One sister-in-law packed only one sweatshirt, no coat, and one pair of thin cotton pants. If that had been me, I'd have long johns probably packed, he he. I'm a freeze cat but I love winter, I know that's odd but that's just me!

Update.....plugged in I. Falls today on wxunderground and mid-afternoon it was only 48! And raining. Now I'm picturing my husband's family all up there shivering like crazy. They just left pleasant summer temps (upper 70s to 80) on Sunday, to 48. Sure hope that lodge they're staying at has an indoor pool! My youngest daughter joked she wished she had been invited along. I asked her today if 48 would have been too cold for her? Laura's reply - YES! So she was glad to be back in Cincinnati. I will have to ask how this I. Falls trip went. My nephew has worked all summer at the lodge, during his break from college. His parents are driving him back home to Chicago. Hence the reason they all traipsed up there in the first place. Lows tonight alone will be near 40!

Yea, definatly a cold day up here in the northern plains, we were looking at record low maximums, and record lows tonight and tomorrow night. It's supposed to be AUGUST!!!!!!!!

International Falls is one of the cold weather capitals in the country. To most folks, that means nothing. To you, it is a neat desitination.

Among the other notables you hear in weather circles...Duluth MN, Fargo ND, Kalispell MT, Quillayute WA, Houlton ME, and even the wonderful town of Gila Bend, Arizona.

Which reminds me...as you enter Gila Bend from I-8 going east, there is a sign that says, "Welcome To Gila Bend, Arizona, home of 1905 wonderful people and 5 old crabs!!! (or something close to that!) They even have a sense of humor there!

Hope they enjoy the summer side of IF!!!

Steve - IF, never thought of that city's initials til now. LOL Wonder who the 5 old crabs are in Gila Bend? I'm sure they know who they are...... Here's another one - Mt. Washington? Although not many probably live there!

Another cold weather city- Watertown, NY. It was the coldest spot in the lower 48 for a number of times this past winter, and had highs in the negative digits on some days (including a high of -8.) Also, Yellowknife in Canada puts anything we have in America to shame. Can you imagine highs in the -20 F to -30 F range?!?

OUCH, now that would be cold!!! I'm assuming that Watertown is right next to the lake?? That is why they have such cold temps in the winter.

Also, Buffalo NY is known for its lake effect snows...like South Bend IN, too. And let's not forget Imperial CA. Yes, Mt. Washington is EXTREME, but it is not a town; instead a staffed meteorological lab.

It's pretty close, I'm guessing about 5 miles.

Also, Montague, NY which holds the US 24 hour snowfall record (74 inches). Buffalo does get a decent amount of snow but its annual amounts are dwarfed by some amounts on the Tug Hill Plateau. Not to mention some of the mountain communities out west that are literally pummelled with snow sometimes.
