I don't live on the NC coast but while in Roa Rpds (northern coastal plain) I did experience effects from Fran (96), Floyd (99) and Isabel (03). Of course not nearly the effects as was felt on the Outer Banks, though in those.
May need to call out the ark and round up animals here in NC over the next 2-3 days due to a stalled frontal system...along w/ Bonnie and Charley, too. FULL platter!
Flood Watch in my area right now until noon Friday currently. Tornado Watch in some southern NC counties until 6 pm ET. Tornado Watch may be extended up in my area later tonight as Bonnie tracks further up into the state...is a risk of isolated tornadoes w/ Bonnie for the overnight hours. Thankfully tornadoes are ALOT weaker in tropical systems mainly on the F0-F1 scale.
John, I have cousins in the Tampa and Sarasota areas.
Ya'll take care in FL, too!
Eric

I was born in Miami (1956), have lived on the FL East Coast my entire live (except for 5 years). My first memory was riding out Donna in 1960 at my grandparent's home in Pompano while my mother delivered my baby sister at Good Samaritan. She, and many other women close to their due dates, went into early labor supposedly due to the rapid baro pressure drop. (That's the tale I was told anyway.)
I don't know exactly know how many direct hits I went through because I was young when the Atlantic East Coast was much more active then now days, and also live weather reporting wasn't as sophisticated. Luckily we survived all with only minor flooding and a couple broken windows, but I can remember being very scared of all the howling and screeching outside. The worst part of any of the storms (for us) was going days with no electricity after a few of the storms.

Diana - Don't remember it because I was like 4 but my parents talk about it.
Gloria when I was very young and growing up near Cape Lookout, thank goodness it just skirted.
Charley - Didn't do much damage but it took forever to clean up the yard afterwards
Fringes of Hugo in the same area, winds got up to 90 I think for a brief period.
1990 unamed (believe it or not we had a hurricane in December. I know it was a nor-easter but it had hurricane force winds and literally dumped feet of snow on extreme eastern north carolina.
1991 - The perfect storm Oct 31- Never named but caused huge waves, over 30 feet in some places. I remember evacuating my home as waves started breaking over the picnic table in the back yard.
Bertha
Fran - I remember driving home from school the day before when it had already started flooding and reaching a point where I could see nothing but water in either direction.
Bonnie (the one that became a hurricane)
Dennis first time
Dennis second time after it looped back
Floyd
Issabell (sp) (wiped out half of the county but for some reason it never really made the news)
I've been in a few
