Severe Weather Check-In (Please check in)

Could everyone please pm me or southerngale with your contact numbers for the Severe Weather Check-in policy? I know that some of you may have sent them in last year, but we're setting up a new one and I apologize if you've sent them in before.

Your numbers will only be seen by me, southerngale, Chad and Marshall. We feel that we can cover the clock very well by having a few of us with them but they will never be used for purposes other than the above mentioned unless you initiate it and we will not share them with anyone else. We want to make sure all of our members are safe in the event severe weather occurs in your area and we don't hear from you. If you do experience severe weather, please post as soon as you can to let everyone know you are ok.

Duckie - never thought of our nics this way before but you're so right. So many of us go by our nics and not our real names. I certainly don't anyone calling me Miss Mary out in the real world! LOL I actually have a few nics...at the doctor's office I used to work at I was Mur (long before the Internet/Message Boards). So to this day, to about 30 people in the Cincinnati area I'm still Mur! On a few boards I belong to I'm Artichoke (taken from my email addy) and a few others I'm Miss Mary. I wish I could be just one nic though....it does get confusing. So call me Mur/Mary/Artichoke, just not Miss Mary (I'm certainly not royalty, plain folk type!) if you all ever need to check on me up here.

Grim, yours has to be the funniest. If anyone asked me on the phone can I talk to the Grim Reaper I'd ask am I being Punked? LOL

Just a note, a probable tornado touched down in Rocky Point, NC due to remnants of Bonnie. At least 1 confirmed fatality. It hit around 0415 thias AM, about 1 1/2 miles from my house. My family is fine.

What an unbelievable 24 hours!!! First we were going to get hit, then we weren't, then we were...etc. I did absolutely NO "supply" shopping until 6:30pm Fri. night, because I was tied up helping out "horse friends" with last minute chores. I will never do that again, we ended up with a buch of tuna fish and canned fruit...no batteries, no water (which isn't a prob, I have an artesian well). I have learned ONE thing from this past 24 hours:

1. Take care of yourself first, if you're not prepared for the storm, you won't be able to help friends afterward, and your obligations are to your own family and self first, ...which sounds selfish, but your own family's needs MUST come first. I could very well have had a disaster on my hands even if we had just lost power for a couple of days, without ice, canned food and canned/bottled beverages!

Grimmy - I was caught off guard when Cincinnati's Blizzard of 78 came thru. It shut our city down for 3 days! I had no idea it was coming, none. Now to be fair to my ignorance, forecasters were caught off guard too. Suddenly around 10 or 11 p.m. winds shifted and local mets knew they had a severe winter storm on their hands. But most folks had gone to bed and missed the 11 p.m. news - me! So I woke up around 5 a.m. to hear our storm windows in an old bungalow (we think it was a Sears kit home from way back!) rattling like crazy. I looked out a window to see snow drifts and a stop sign touching the ground, both sides. That's when I knew I was grounded. Couldn't get to work, couldn't get out to the grocery store, winds were 60 MPH plus. I took one look at my fridge and pantry and gasped! We weren't eating catsup soup near the end, so it wasn't too bad but I wished I had kept my groceries stocked better. So now when I hear snow I stock up. Your story reminded me of that time. Once you go thru something like this, you make sure you are stocked in the future.

I'm glad you didn't have a disaster on your hands. And I agree with your advice - take care of your family first and then lend a helping hand.

Just checking in from FL.

We were evacuated due to being in a low lying area, on the intracoastal and having a roof that was not structually safe due to ungoing repair.
Most of our neighbours stayed, but having a 5 month old baby I decided it would be better to move off the intracoastal.

We got home yesterday morning. Loads of debris from trees in the road (My husband got the tractor and moved a lot of oak trees which were blocking peoples drive ways for them and they could not get out) Our house is fine and the roof held well. The wind reports were 50-70mph here in Flagler. I can not even begin to think what 100+mph must be like!

I am so greatful to God above that my family is safe. Prayers going out to those who have missing loved ones!

Same here, Bron. Just alot of trees and powerlines down. Not really much in the way of structural damage, but a few shingles were blown off my neighbor's roof and ended up near my driveway. All in all we SHOULD consider ourselves extremely lucky. Folks In orange, Seminole, and Volusia Counties didn't do anywhere near as well as we did or for that matter the majority of the I-4 corridor.
