the AP is reporting that the city of Tampa may cut power to its downtown tomorrow in order to minimize the risk to the area. The official word will come later this evening.

I know that cut power for typhoons in Japan to minimize damage. . . I guess it's a good idea rather than a chain reaction to an outage that may be isolated if it weren't for the whole electrical grid being active. (No electrician/power specialist - just guessing).

Hmmmmm. So I suppose they don't expect ANYONE to be in downtown tampa? Is it strictly business or are there residential areas as well?

I hope we don't have another Floyd scenario here and Tampa get nothing but some TS force winds and Charley heads up and makes landfall in App. Bay. I can hear the grumblings now and it'll all be Bush's fault!

I just can't see it getting that far north...and even if it does, it will still provide some very strong winds to the western coast of Florida...since it will be paralleling it. Not good news either way.

The water vapor loop shows a strong trough still digging into the Gulf.... too strong, I think, to have Charlie bust through it or overcome the strong steering winds and take a parallel track to the coast. I would suggest that Charlie may actually turn easterly sooner that the latest model runs...

That is not good.... They (NHC) will have to re-evaluate EVERYTHING... Then Charley won't weaken that much then... If thfis does happen.... Bad news for New Engaland, especially for the Cape..
