PLEASE Remember the PETS!

#1 Postby seaswing » Thu Aug 12, 2004 6:49 pm

Everyone, please do not forget your pets! If for some reason, they have to be left outside (which isn't a good idea) DO NOT tie them to anything! tieing them to a poll or structure is the worst thing you could do. It is a death sentence if a strong wind or other flying object comes their way. If you cannot take them to a shelter with you, please make every attempt to find a veterinary hospital or the likes to board them. If that is not possible, let them stay inside, but not confined to a room as they sometimes have a 'sixth sense' about these things and will hide in the house where they feel the safest.

I know that there are a lot of veterinary hospitals and boarding places that will give discounts for people who have to evacuate..... but don't wait till the last minute.

Better yet, get some tranquilizers to put your pet out of it. It's very common for older pets to die from heart attacks.

My dog does need tranquilizers. She flips out when it just rains...no thunder or anything. Drama here every day during the rainy season. LOL

Remember that most shelters WILL NOT accept pets. Those with pets should stay in a hotel. Almost 100% of hotels accept pets during hurricanes. And do remember, that pets are aware that something is wrong, as well. They will get nervous. They read their owners and see other people, as well. Hold your pet and give the pet love and whisper sweet nothings into the pets ear and let them know that you are there and that everything will be OK. It's good to try to calm the frightened pets down.

VERY GOOD POINT! hotels are a very good option....although in this area there are shelters that will take pets, but you need to check first to make sure you choose the right one.

Totally agree with you Sean. Shelters do not take pets during a hurricane. Hotels will even if they normally don't.

try and get into some of the higher buildings such as hotels if you have pets. Just save them, do whatever you can to help them!

Also, don't assume that you'll be able to quickly return to your home to tend to a pet left behind once the storm passes. Many times on TV I've seen extremely upset pet owners blocked from returning to their neighborhoods by national guardsmen reacting to widespread destruction, hazards like downed power lines and/or to prevent looting. In extreme cases, like the devastation of Navarre Island by Opal in '95, such delays lasted for days not just hours.

I personally would avoid leaving a pet behind in a landfall zone if at all possible. But if you must, leave out several days' worth of of food and water...you never know how soon you'll be able to return.

Very good advice.

I remember reading about an apartment owner who could not return to his apt. near Ground Zero after 9/11 for days. His cat tore open a bag of cat food and sipped water from dirty dishes that were soaking in the kitchen sink. When the owner was permitted to return, the cat was fine.

Don't know why that story came to me but it did. When that owner left for work, he probably thought he was coming back within 8-10 hours? You just never know what will happen. That was a smart cat.
