Holy crap! Even the people in the shelters could be in for a scary ordeal with that kind of storm. This is most grim indeed :(

Moving at 20 mph across Florida, what would the wind be like for a 145 mph storm by the time it reaches Orlando and Daytona?

Charley strengthened Friday afternoon to a major hurricane with winds estimated at 145 mph at its core, said Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. The projected track moved slightly to the south Friday afternoon, indicating that landfall could take place in the Sarasota-Charlotte county area, south of the more heavily populated Tampa Bay area that includes Tampa and St. Petersburg, meteorologist Daniel Brown said.

If there is any saving grace to this, it's that the rapid deepening is occuring NOW, instead of right at landfall like in Andrew. Perhaps we may catch a break and have an inner eyewall collapse just before landfall. At least I hope so.

I think I'm going to be sick....

Is there any possibility that this storm could intensify further... or is it topping out as a Category 4?

I just keep thinking of all the people in Ft. Meyers who thought it was going to Tampa... and all the people in Tampa who were bracing for a lesser storm....

I'm sorry to say that is not the case. It's going to landfall in the next hour or so near Fort Myers. There is no time for weakening.

I cannot believe this is happening.

Unbelievable. Jacksonville is preparing for tropical storm force winds! School is still in session and we are 12 hours from potential 100 mph winds!

Whats next? Charley strengthening into a Cat 5? This is awful, For Myers and Port Charlotte could be near destroyed by this thing.

Well, the hurricane has REALLY intensified since this post was made. This is a MAJOR DISASTER. People in Ft. Myers should have been evacuated!
