Steve:
Close-up radar seems to show movement varying from 7 degrees to 23 degrees east of due north. Too short a radar cycle to tell for sure, but if it stays at 20 degrees east, it will pop out at Daytona. I suspect we (I am in Melbourne) will get in on steady winds in the 60 mph range, with gusts in hurricane velocity. You already know we will be on the "strong side," so folks on our Space Coast beaches will get a pretty good blast (and surge) off the Atlantic. Looks like the tornado that was spotted outside of Cape Canaveral is just the beginning...

Stay safe fellow Brevardian...

Andrew had a pressure of around 935 mb when he made landfall and the lowest I have seen for Charley was 941. Apparantly these large storms get squeezed and really wind up just before landfall.

Andrew had a 920-922 when it went in. It was also rapidly deeping. That makes a big difference on how strong the winds are at the sfc. Small wind field in Andrew just like Charley.

Report: Captiva Island Completely Underwater

#2095 Postby wx247 » Fri Aug 13, 2004 4:08 pm

I tried posting this once and the server failed. The AP is reporting that all of that island is underwater. Storm surge is higher than 15 ft. These are unconfirmed reports but the AP is passing this along at this hour.

Actually, Andrew was down to 922 at landfall.

This is a serious storm, obviously, but a strong 4, not a 5. Sounds like another case of a news reporter not doing his research. Gusts do not make a category.
