This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Who is Jim Reed (sp?) on CNN

#1 Postby Pebbles » Sat Aug 14, 2004 4:55 pm

CNN just showed guy filming the storm. Looks like he got side smacked by a roof and his only saving grace was there was some kinda roof over him (patio or something didn't get a good enough look). They said he also lives in the midwest for tornado season. Is this a researcher or a chaser... I sure wouldn't be wanting people to know I almost got myself killed!

I even wonder by the way he was acting if he even has had proper Storm Spotter training.

I know the anchor on CNN was not impressed with his risk taking or his reasons for doing. Neither was I.

Jim Reed mostly chases tornadoes. It's hard to say about hurricane chasers as they tend to take more risks than when chasing tornadoes-you should check out Richard Horodner's or Jim Leonard's videos some time. Of course, when chasing hurricanes you have to be in it rather than off to the side as with a tornado. Jim Leonard's classic videos are the ones where an entire roof from a building lands very close to the vehicle he and his chase partner are in and his shot of the storm surge coming in waist high as he's on the beach videotaping the surf. Horodner once drove into Biloxi MS in the eyewall of hurricane Elena and videotaped the classic eye passage.
