the opposite. Yeah I know we have no Charley out there to
contend with but there still are areas of potential in the tropics to discuss

If there's one thing to know about meteorologists, it's that we use an acronym for just about everything on Earth. I'll try to find a good page, but I think a lot of them are only used in some circles so it might be hard.

LLC(C) - Low level circulation (center)
MLC(C) - Mid " " "
MCV - mesoscale convective vortex
BOC - Bay of Campeche
MJO - Madden-Julian Oscillation
ENSO - El Nino Southern Oscillation
NAO - North Atlantic Oscillation
PDO - Pacific Decadal Oscillation
GOM - Gulf of Mexico
.....The list goes on, maybe we should start a thread that explains all of these. I'll try to find a link for you in the meantime.

Hey Wainfleeter!!! Ask away!!! We will answer or find someone to answer for us if we don't know.

LLC is short for low level circulation or more commonly known as LLCC low level circulation center, meaning a well developed(hopefully)low pressure circulation center had made it to the surface and thus we have a developing tropical cyclone.

There are no stupid questions unless of course you ask the same question that was answered in the post above your question. The professionals and the many good amateurs on this site are more than happy to answer questions and discuss weather with everyone.

I don't post that often because I really don't know squat about the dynamics of weather, that's why I'm here. I'm an old geezer (48 y/o) and there are a few things that excite my old heart. Here they are in no particular order. Gators beat the Noles (happens about once a decade), Gators beat the Vols (maybe every other year), Mom's Apple Pie, a Nice Big storm in the GOM and last, but not least...well, I shouldn't have to tell you what the last one is.

Here's a question for the gurus- what are some ways that an amature can ID a LLC?

Well, the only way to really do it is to have verification from Recon, a ship, or surface stations. But, using satellite data, it is relatively easy to see sometimes, especially with quickscat. QuickSCAT senses ocean roughness, which is a measure of how the winds are interacting with the ocean surface to get a proxy for wind direction and speed. Some satellites can see cloud motions, but only usually in the mid or upper levels. If clouds are covering a circulation center, you nor I could see a low level circulation. The easiest way I've found is to look at the surface cumulus on a visible satellite loop. Cumulus are the ones that are little white dots and their bases are relatively close to the surface. If they are moving towards a cloud mass in a counterclockwise motion (towards the east or SE on the west side of the LLC, towards the N or NE on the southern side, towards the W or NW on the eastern side and towards the W or SW on the northern side...confused yet...I am), then there is likely a low level circulation because the air is rushing into the lower pressure and forming the convection. Hope this helps.

The easiest way is to look for low-level clouds south of the "circulation" going west-to-east.
