Not Really a Hang-up.......

#21 Postby GrimReaper » Wed Aug 18, 2004 6:54 pm

Most of you know, we have LOTS of pets..... But I think the weirdest behavior I have witnessed has come from my daughter's two guinea pigs. I can't believe how smart these over-sized rodents are, they've got us completely "wrapped"!! It began when we started calling to them "peeeeegies", and giving them pieces of treats like carrots, apples, and other fresh fruit. They would respond by squealing, making a whistling noise, and sitting up on their little butts with their front paws in the air...BEGGING!! Then it went a step further, and every time someone went in the fridge (icebox) the "peegies" would start their comic begging routine, seemingly knowing the treats came from the fridge. Now it has gotten so out of control, that when you even walk past their huge habitrail enclosure, they sit back, wave those front paws at you and start squealing and whistling!! I can't help but wonder if they are saying to us..."hey huuuuuumans, get us a treeeaatt!!!

PS....thanks to everyone at S2K who sent me prayers after I finally had to admit defeat, and have the horse I've been nursing almost 24 hours a day, for over a month, humanely put down. Very early Tuesday morning "Bud" laid his head in my lap, looked up into my eyes, and communicated to me that he was ready to give up. He hadn't been able to stand in almost 24 hours! Our vet came out and it was over in seconds. I had already prepared a braid from his mane and tail to give to the little 12 yr old girl who owned him, and I told her how bravely her horse fought for his life! I am proud of Heidi, and her Mom, for making the heart-wrenching decision to donate "Bud's" body to the University of Florida at Gainesville to further study the often fatal equine disorder, Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis! Because of their sacrifice, maybe some other little girl's horse will be saved due to ongoing research. Please pray for my young friend Heidi, and her family, they have seen the best and worst of horse ownership all in the space of 6 months!!! Thanks again, I love all of you at S2K!!!

Grim Reaper,

I hope you find peace in the fact that 'Bud' is now up there in a place called Rainbow bridge where all our animal friends will meet us. This is one of my favourite poems called the Rainbow Bridge. *hugs*

Oh Grim! I was near tears reading your post. I will keep Heidi in my prayers and you too.

Wainfleeter - wow, you are just fitting in here like we've known you all along! I have heard of this poem and read quotes from it, but never in its entirety. Thank you for posting it! BTW, can I ask you for your first name? I realize now your nic is the city you live in. And I just like to use someone's first name when replying to a post they made. That goes for you Grimmy!!! After all this time I don't even know your first name! If I did, I forgot it - temporary alzheimer's moment there.

Grim - aha, your secret is out, girl!!! LOL Thanks!!! My middle name is Anne.....small world. Yes at one time my given name was Mary Anne. Until I was 10 and said that's it, call me just Mary from now on. Broke my mother's heart for a while there I think but I stood my ground. My one brother calls me Mary Anne to get my attention. All I have to hear when answering the phone is - MARY ANNE - and I know it's him.

Thanks for sharing that. I know you like to come off as some tough cookie but I don't know, Ann-Marie makes you seem nicer now....be nice, now don't throw things at me or put a curse on me Grim Reaper!!!

Our dog, Rudy, was raised by our cats. We let our pets up on the furniture. Rudy thinks it's absolutely normal for him to sit on top of the sofa (he's only 20 pounds)!

I'm sure i'll think of others.

Here's the advice our Vet gave us when Hope was a puppy:

Don't let her on furniture.
Don't let her upstairs. (I was keeping a gate at the bottom of the steps at this point)
Don't make over her when you first come home, ignore her for a full 5 minutes and then glance down to say hello.

Well, we flunked big time on all three! We all laugh now when Hope is rolling around on my waterbed (which she loves BTW) or curling up on the couch, or stealing your spot on the couch if you get up for a snack and say - if the Vet could see us now!!!

He explained the part about ignoring her when we come in - if you don't make over your dog a lot, then they won't get very attached to you and when they go to the kennel, they won't miss as much. Hello? Has he really taken a good look at MY dog? LOL Ignore her? Is he crazy? The way I figured it was this - we go one weekly vacation a year so that's about a 9 day kennel stay. Then a 4 day family reunion. Add one more weekend over a year and that adds up to about 16 or so days a year she's at the kennel. I'm supposed to ignore this dog the other 249 days a year? Again, is he nuts? LOL

Did I ever say how much we luv this dog? he he

I am so sorry about the horse Ann-Marie. I was praying he would make it. He was such a fighter and I just knew he would be okay. I hate that disease and there is no cure for it. :(

Please give Heidi a hug from me!!

Did I mention how much I HATE POSSUMS!!!!

Miss Mary and (Grim)Ann-Marie, Thanks!!!!!

I promised in one of the "Hurricane Hollow" threads to check out the rest of the board. Really and truly kept 'forgetting' there is so much more to Storm2k than just those threads.

I put my name in my signature for ya. I did not know what name to sign up with. Noticed most people were using weather names. Foxyred is my normal "handle" elsewhere on the web. Yep, a redhead too. Laughing. My husband calls me Fred all the time. I finally asked him why? He told me it was short for FOXY-RED. ROLFMAO.....I told him: "Good answer honey!" LOL

There are some really funny pets out there..Great stuff in this thread!

I was trying to think of the weirdest thing my cat Rattboy does and I would have to say his habit of licking my car. He'll get up on my car in the morning when there is dew all over it and lick off a big spot, usually on the roof of my car or the hood. He never goes on any of the neighbors cars or my husbands, just mine. He's such a little dork. He also likes to lick the bushes after it rains.

Wow GrimReaper! That must have been tough with Bud! :( But at least he's not suffering anymore and is in heaven now.

Where do I start LOL!

Sweetz.....she hates the vaccum cleaner, attacks it every single time, raises the hair on her neck and trys to bite it. "BALLS!" The dog is absouletly NUTZ over BALLS, ANYKIND, footballs, baseballs, GOLF BALLS....I'll hit balls in the backyard, she'll chase 'em and drop them at my feet  but MOST of ALL..."Tennis balls!" We go thru 2 cans a MONTH :grr: If we don't throw them for her, she gets MAD and POPS 'EM

Macy....she HAS to have STUFFED animals (we call 'em babies), she has a toy box FULL of babies. She'll go in, pick one out and RUN through the house GROWLING with the babies in her mouth. Last but NOT least, she too, LOVES BALLS....thanks to SWEETZ  Same scenario as Sweetz, if you don't throw 'em, she'll POP 'EM

Donna - thanks for telling us your first name!!! Foxy-red huh? Or as your husband says - Fred! You got me laughing this Thursday morning I tell ya....hey I like red hair. I'm a brunette by birth, I color to cover gray now, but it's close to my natural shade. The gold in my color actually gives me auburn highlights! That was a surprise!!! My hubby is a redhead and we were hoping our girls would have red hair but we now think one of our grandchildren will someday (years from now, my kids are 14 and 17)! I used to put henna on my hair back in the late 70s/early 80s. It was getting really auburn back then! LOL I'm just a sucker for redhair.

Mary - so your cat is a licker?!!! So is Hope but mostly our hands. We have an antique trunk, with brass handles and hinges. She likes to lick the brass parts and has actually left marks, so we say no to that now. And somewhere along the line we discovered she likes to lick her tags so we take her collar off to calm her down. She'll just lick away. Yes, her tags look pretty worn by now. You'd think she was a dog kept outside all the time! Quite the opposite - I never knew Goldens were so affectionate and people lovers. She's with us 95% of the time. Only occasionally does she go off for a nap. Her naps are usually right next to us.

Keep the pet stories coming everyone.

And thanks again for the first name Wainfleeter/Donna!!

My Yorkshire Terrier, Madison, goes nuts over Furby! It started 3 years ago as a puppy, when the Furby was bigger than her, but continues to this day. Whenever I put the Furby on the floor and "wake him up," Maddy flips out. She will bark and bark, but never get close to it. If I put my hand on the Furby, she will approach cautiously, then viciously, and bite his mouth! hahaha One time she even grabbed a hold of it and flung it a few feet! That only succeded to scare her even more. So now, if she's in another room and hears Furby wake up, she runs into the room, ready to attack.

my cat absolutely hates my feet, and only my feet. The ears go back flat on the head...he stalks with the arse hunched up in the air, then pounces and bites viciously. It doesn't matter if I have shoes on, same story.

Also...same cat..has decided that he needs to sleep in the dog bed with the dog. He now races to the bed to beat the dog there to obtain prime sleeping position. Cat then will rub against dog, purring and kneeding, demanding some affection from dog. I believe the cat is gay, and also thinks he is a dog.

Oklahoma - Furby's!!! My daughter had one and our dog would stare at it!!! It was so funny. Now the Furby is dead, even with new batteries (I think she changed them) he doesn't wake up. She also has the American Girl doll Samantha. Samantha sits on a chair in her room still, although Nina is now 17. Hope thinks Samantha is real! She wags her tail as if she's a person, we all crack up when she does that. We say - say hi to Samantha Hope!

j - your cat sounds crazy! Hates your feet? Now I have to ask this question - did you ever kick this cat? Come on now....tell the truth?!!! LOL Sounds as if your cat thinks the dog is her mother also.
