Latest JTWC Aere Warning Shows Blocking Effect of Chaba

#1 Postby Cyclone Runner » Sat Aug 21, 2004 10:01 am

JTWC Warning #9 shifts Aere path significantly to the left, but interestingly enough it has scaled back its forcast strengthening. In a reversely of earlier models, Chaba is now forecast to become the larger of the two storms. This increases the threat to Okinawa and Southern Japan, and even starts to bring Taiwan into play.

The interesting thing would be if the storms got close enough for binary rotation ala' Dr. Fujiwhara.

The 'Fujiwara effect' is a rare phenomenon, where two storms can essentially collide and spin around each other.

As a matter of fact, I believe the WFO in Guam mentioned that the track of Chaba will be chaotic because of the Fujiwara effect.

There are good illustrations of the Fujiwara Effect at
http://agora.ex.nii.ac.jp/digital-typho ... ex.html.en

If the centers of typhoons are smaller than about 1000 km, they may show complex movements because of the interaction between them. The typhoon interaction of this kind is called "Fujiwara Effect," after the name of the Japanese meteorologist who first observed this effect. A few examples of this effect are shown below.
