EBAY--Charley jar--$500 bid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 Postby Anonymous » Mon Aug 23, 2004 10:52 am

Some complete idiot has bid 500 bucks on the hurricane charley wind jar on Ebay.--UNBELIEVABLE..It only has 1 hour left on that particular item...but there are new "Charley jars" from other people with starting bids at 9.99... Dont these people understand that these jars are worthless? If they had been placed in the eye of Charley with 941MB and sealed air tight, the jar would have imploded when the storm passed and pressure returned to normal...This jar of air is not air tight and they are just spending 500 dollars on a mason jar  This dude has just scammed somebody 500 bucks!!!!!!!!!

Actually...the jar would not have imploded...it would be just a really tight seal.

The pressure in mason/ball jars when you can are a lot lower than what was in Charley.

And...think about this...that would mean that if I had an empty jar and sealed it at the top of Pike's Peak (which is about 600 mb...I actually took a barometer up there once)...that the jar would blow upon your return to the Co. Springs area. And...it would also mean you could never take one on an airplane...since they are pressurized to about 800 mb's.

So...no blown jars...just stupid people. I could simulate the same thing in my canner with the 15 lb pressure cap on.

Thanks for clearing that up---but you agree it was a stupid bid and EBAY should have pulled it? I could have put a jar in my front yard in Jacksonville, Fla and said it was from hurricane Charley---this guy could be in Panama city or Houston I would say Minnesota but palm trees say its coastal. I cant believe someone spent $500 on this jar. Where is this guys proof and are Mason jars really airtight?

Some people have more money than sense. A FOOL and his money are soon parted. There's a sucker born every minute.

Looks like the jar is in New Smyrna Beach, about 15 miles south of Daytona Beach which didn't have such a low pressure anyway.

I am not exactly sure where the broad center passed the east coast of Florida but it may not have even been New Smyrna Beach.

Screw them and their fake air bottles, I've got REAL rain from Charley :D

I've collected rain from every tropical cyclone to visit Fayetteville since 2001. So far I've got 5: Allison (2001), Hanna (2002), Bill (2003), Isabel (2003), and Charley (2004). I put a bucket out in the middle of the yard, then after the rain stops, I pour it into a 32 oz. Gatorade bottle :P

I see a comic book hero being born now:

Mild-mannered North Carolinian sports fan by day, but at night, he takes one swig from his precious collection of tropical rain and becomes HURRICANE FREAK -- a torrent of wind and rain, tearing through the city streets, wiping drug dealers and thieves off the map and blowing corruption and murder away for good!

Hurrican Freak - a category 5 fight for truth, justice, and Pylox clips on every window.
