Karan - I'll try that! Heard white vinegar did the same thing, full strength. But it didn't do squat! Salt makes sense. And if the dog licks, it's just salt.
I will say I have Salt Sense on hand, reduced sodium salt. We've used that for years ever since my dad had his heart trouble back in the mid-80s. Guess I'd have to get the real thing but it's cheap-cheap isn't it?
Thanks.

New 2006 weed question.....
If I've severely cut down my shrubs (cotoneaster is one) and I can clearly see the weed that grows near the cotoneaster roots, but not inside the rootball, can I spray roundup at the weed's root area? And if I do, will the shrub be okay?
I hacked my cotoneaster down to a foot off the ground and 8 inches away is a nice weed, that is huge if I leave it alone. Almost looks like a small tree. I can't dig it out, it would be hard to get to.
This area is in my front yard, nowhere our dog's electric collar range. So I can use a Roundup type product.
Thanks!

Mary, my understanding is that round up needs to be absorbed through the leaves and kills the plant that way. Maybe it would work on just the root, I don't know.
As for spraying near your shrub, if you are afraid it will get on the shrub you can use a paint brush and put it on the weed that way. It will not spread from the weed to the shrub if you only put it on the weed. I have painted poison ivy near other plants in the past and it never harmed the other plants.
Good luck!

I thought you were going to say Bayer Aspirin, Karan! LOL I don't care for Round Up either, I know it's very harmful to pets - it's really poison. I'll look for these products.
I just want to kill this weed, b/c the stems and leaves come up all summer long, thru-out this 2 plant cotoneaster grouping I have. And if you've ever touch a cotoneaster with your bare hands, it hurts. Even with gloves on. This is the time to get that weed b/c I can easily see it.
Thanks Loren for your reply too. I usually just pull weeds but have sprayed a few that come between the driveway concrete sections. I keep Round Up on hand for that. Or a generic type product.

To kill a weed growing near a plant you want to save, dip a small foam paintbrush into the full strength Roundup and "paint it" on the leaves of the weed. It will not get into the plant you want to save . I learned this tip from a person who wanted to save a daylily that had a weed growing right next to the crown. Couldn't use Roundup without killing the daylily too. So they used a small foam paintbrush to put the Roundup on the leaves of the weed. Two days later the weed was gone and the daylily was sending up a scape to bloom.

We occasionally purchase items from a catalog called Improvements. I saw a blow torch for sale, @ $39.99. It was recommended for melting ice on porches and sidewalks and for blasting stubborn weeds. I did a whoa! Seems extreme but thought I'd mention it for anyone who wants to get rid of weeds (or melt ice this winter, if we ever have a winter!). I think I'll try the paint method you suggested DDD first. It's much cheaper but this blow torch idea sounds like it would work too!
