What's the record for number of named storms in August?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What's the record for number of named storms in August?

#1 Postby Brent » Wed Aug 25, 2004 3:54 pm

All of the named storms so far in the Atlantic have formed in August. With Frances, we're up to six. Does anyone know what the record is?

1995 had 7 named storms form in August, which is the most active August this side of 1950.

Well this has been a pretty active August then. If that blob off the SE coast develops in the next 6 days, that'll be 6 named storms.

There's also the possibility of something else developing, like the African wave.

Yes. Became a TD on July 31st at 5pm and was upgraded to TS Alex on August 1st at 2pm.

Doesn't matter. NHC began issuing advisories on the system during the month of July, so the storm goes down as a July storm.

It depends on what the question is. If the question is "how many tropical storms developed in August", then Alex is included, since it developed into a tropical storm in August. If the question is "how many tropical cyclones developed (or formed) in August", then Alex does not count.

Here is a list of the top 10 Augusts from 1851-2003, in terms of number of "named storms" formed during the month. This includes subtropicals, since they are now named the same as tropicals:

TOP YEARS

# YEAR VALUE
1 1933 7.00
2 1995 7.00
3 1936 6.00
4 1990 6.00
5 1855 5.00
6 1856 5.00
7 1881 5.00
8 1893 5.00
9 1969 5.00
10 1976 5.00

named storms refers to tropical storms only, not tropical depressions.

That's right, T.D. #1 (Alex) was declared at the end of July, and will go down (like Derek stated) as a July cyclone ...
