Will Fl. get "whomped" this year ?
Well answer is yes!! Charley has already hurt alot of people. And, sorry too say.. was a relatively small storm "in scope". It is quite obvious for Fl. that a well established system ..feeding on warm water.. could pull off an even more devastating scenario. This could possibly be a wake up call for some of us that did not live in Fl in the20's and 30's. Heck.. I didn't live there then.. but I do now! Most are false alarms, but one or two, are not. I am still looking for the "weakness" that saves the SE US. May still come into play..hope it does for all of us. PS..not dismissing concerns for any one else in this country, or anywhere else. Farewell for the remainder!

Those that follow hurricanes have said its just a matter of time for the
infamous "big one" in several areas. New Orleans is way past due,
Miami is still not far removed from Andrew. Houtson hasn't had a bad
storm in years (Allison rained 3 feet, but that's a little different).
Maybe Frances is here to remind folks that nobody is safe in coastal areas.

The last significant hurricane(notice I said hurricane)we had in Houston was Hurricane Alicia in August, 1983. Allison, of course was a tropical storm, but oh what a doozy!!! I am watching Frances with a keen eye and hoping that this potentially very dangerous hurricane does find the weakness in the ridge and blasts right through it out to sea. Unfortunately, at this point it does not appear that the "fish" scenario is going to happen. With Frances at least 7 days from landfall we do have time to watch and hope for the best though.

Add Tampa to the list. The last direct hit on the Tampa Bay area was Oct. 1921
,which was 83 years ago. I thought for sure Charley was going to be the "big one", but mother nature decided otherwise to hit Southwest Florida
. If the high pressure area builds as the NHC 11:00am discussion describes by Stacey Stewart, then Florida might, I stress might, be facing a big hurricane by this time next week. Thoughts and comments welcomed.

I really don't see how the Houston/Galveston area could handle a strong cat.3 or better storm. It would be pretty horrific. Last year Claudette (cat.1) side swiped Galveston Island and their was a bunch of damage to the west end of Galveston which tends to be very vulnerable to tropical systems. Again this wasn't even a direct hit. I direct hit from a strong cat. 3 storm or better to Galveston and then through Houston would be......heck, I really can't even see something like this coming into play. It would be very ugly and that's putting it lightly.
