I know it has happened in the past. There are plenty of examples. With that said, i'd take my chances with a strengthening Hurricane in the middle of the Atlantic than one "exploding" like Charley did two weeks ago.

if Frances even gets close to the size of Floyd she won't need to be really strong to be a disaster.

Well, according to NRL, it is a cat. 2 with 95 M.P.H. winds. It is bound to strengthen, so hopefully shear or something will rip it apart.

What do you see out ahead of Hurricane Frances that brings you to this conclusion?

There have been Hurricanes that maintained Cat 3 or Cat 4 status most of the way across the Atlantic.
I worry about "exploding" Hurricanes right before landfall. Not in the middle of the Atlantic.
