A borderline idiotic note about my neighbors..

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

A borderline idiotic note about my neighbors..

#1 Postby Josephine96 » Fri Aug 27, 2004 10:42 am

Not my neighbors exactly.. but about 3/4 people here at the local community college DON'T EVEN KNOW THERE IS SUCH A THING AS HURRICANE SEASON..

A lot of the 1's I talked to think that Charley was just a freakish occurence and when I told them about Frances they're like "No.. we had 1 storm and that is it.. it won't happen again for a very long time because it's Florida and hurricanes don't hit here".

I'd say only about 20-25 percent of the people here even know that Charley was a hurricane either..

That's true also.. They all don't know what a hurricane is.. then it hits and they try to play it off.. "Oh I know what it was.. I knew it was coming and just didn't prepare" or some crazy stuff like that

I once gave a lecture on hurricane preparedness at the grocery store I worked at.

5 people showed up.

You have to be kidding. Florida is one of the biggest targets for a hurricane strike because the Peninsula sticks out. To be honest, I am surprised it doesn't get hit more.

Josephine96.. Stupidity ( Ignorance) is widespread :

The following comments were made in the storm prep meeting at my work on Thursday, August 12.... needless to say... the statements we NOT made by me !!

1. We are 25 miles inland. When storms come from the east they always slow down by the time they reach us. This one ( Charley) will slow down a lot more as it travels all the way across Florida from the west coast.
2. Flooding is only a problem with the storm surge.
3. A Category 1 storm won't do all that much damage. The winds are not much more than some of our summer storms.
4. I think we should keep the night shift here on duty so they can be ready provide assistance and start the clean up first thing in the morning.

Oh.. I forgot one more..

5. Storms from the east always miss us because of the "shelf" in the Atlantic.

?????? hmmm..... News to me

ok .. one more ....

#6. We don't need to take the satelite dish on the roof all the way down. We'll just tie it down real good.

Sadly... through sheer luck .... it DIDN'T get blown off the roof... I'll never be able to convince them to take it down in the future.
