DADE, BROWARD, PALM BEACH... Evac. Problem!

#1 Postby ericinmia » Sun Aug 29, 2004 2:03 am

I see a major problem developing; this problem may also be one of the reasons why the NHC is being so cautious.

Especially with the labor day weekend in effect, it will be IMPOSSIBLE for those that want to evacuate to do so, once the hurricane watches go up for south fla. (jumping the gun, i know "Hypothetical")

It is predicted that around 2 million people alone will attempt to leave Miami-Dade county alone. Because of the corrolation with what happened in Andrew, with people going down south for saftey.

There is no combination of roads in south fla that can handle this sort of traffic from Miami-Dade, let alone people from Monroe (the keys) and Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Lets take this step by step for a second...

1. The storm is 3-4 days away... only a thought on people's minds, local mets still downlplaying it.
2. Frances is 48 or so hours away and hurricane watches go up... people begin to scramble for supplies, to secure their houses, and make evac plans. The local mets tell people to leave the area.
3. 24 hours before frances, people are getting on the road and attempting to leave... Millions (No exageration) attempt to take I-95, I-75, and the Fl turnpike North. However the roads are no where near capable of handeling this traffic.
4. City, County, State, and Federal... all in emergency mode attempting to figure out what to do with this unheard of, unplanned for traffic crisis.
5. Storm begins to approach before people are off the roads, either safely going north, or able to return home.

6. Those that returned home... DID not prepare for riding out a storm, and are in VERY poor shape.

This is not a worst case scenario either... its up there however.

I luckily live far enough inland in a house with custom shutters capable of withstanding winds above 200mph! My house will be home to about 40+ people, who have to evac.
However here is another dillema... In the morning i will post pictures. There is a house directly next door under construction, however it is in the stage where they are about ready to pour the councrete into the walls and beams to finalize the main structure for the lower floor. The house is COVERED in plywood tacked ever so lightly together. I have invested some time lately into the legalities of this durring a storm and i discovered at the onset of a Hurricane watch the owner is required to secure the entire construction site.

Will this happen? No, there will be not enough time, too much histeria, etc.

This is not looking too good, however in my sick twisted mind i see a ray of hope... :)

My Davis Pro Weather station arrives monday morning... and as long as i have internet by fiber, or phone, you all will get to see through webcam the conditions outside my house, and view the weather. Hopefully updated as frequently as possible.

I went through Andrew, and went down to the worst hit area's of south dade... complete destruction, with even concrete walls demolished.

I hope the NHC, and local mets at least grow a balls enough to tell people of the possibility of the storm. As it is not very many know much about what is possibly at our door, that is if they have even heard of it at all.

Sorry for the long post... :(

g-night

Nice post. Do you remember how many people were evacuating with Hurricane Floyd was threatening back in 1999?

When they thought that Floyd was going to be a threat to FL, wasn't that the first time that even Cape Canaveral did a total evacuation.

There are a few teenagers on this board. A user by the name of Colin is 13, a user by the name of David (not VBHouTex) is 15, and MartinsVille Weather is 18 or 19 IIRC. Also Tom (ColdFront77) is 27 (again IIRC) as indicated by the 77 at the end of his user name. :)

Some of whom act more mature than me at times.

(trying to keep this on-topic)...

I agree that this is going to be a difficult situation at best.

I live in Southeast Central Florida (St Lucie County) which is one hour north of West Palm Beach. This far out, no one knows where this storm is heading.

With next weekend being Labor Day weekend and the last so-called weekend of the summer, I expect there will be many on the roads. If/when South Florida calls for evacuations, I-95 and the Florida turnpike will be a nightmare. Besides moving the millions of people from down south, there will be those in our area that will also be looking to evacuate. (I read somewhere that if South Florida were to take a hit, hurricane force winds could be felt as far north as Melbourne).

EOC is our area suggests that people don't evacuate until they are told to. They will instruct people in mobile homes and on the barrier islands to leave first. By the time this decision is made, it is very conceivable that the main roads will already be clogged by those from South Florida trying to flee the storm.

I would suggest that anyone in a position to leave earlier might want to start thinking about doing so a few days earlier. Although many retired Floridians live on fixed incomes, there are just as many that have the luxury of being able to travel on a regular basis. If some of these folks would leave a bit earlier, it may help with some of the traffic flow.

As anyone who lives in (or has visited FL) knows, our roads are ALWAYS under construction - which will add significantly to any evacuation problems. I drove down to Ft Lauderdale a few weeks ago - and got caught in 1 hour plus delays on 95 between W Palm and Ft Lauderdale (both ways)...and that was a 'normal' weekend. Add a few million more motorists and you'll have a nightmare. I really see this turning into a Floyd like scenario - with the southern part of the state evacuating first - but with Frances perhaps heading further north (as some models and even the NHC are hinting at). If she headed further north, then those evacuations would keep rolling further up the state. I remember trying to find a hotel with Floyd - and was told there weren't any east of Montgomory AL! (actually, I had a hotel in Tallahasee - unfortunately, I didn't take into account the fact that storms typically pick up speed as they head further north - so I had a room for the night AFTER I'd need it - not the night we'd have to evacuate - can you say lesson learned??).

Anyways, sorry for the ramble - I agree this will be a nightmare in terms of evacuation - and a truly horrific nightmare for whoever gets Frances as a guest in their home.

Cape Canaveral - the space center? maybe but not totally.
Cape Canaveral - the city? No. In the last 14 years I've been here, we've had mandatory evacuations for Erin, Floyd, and another one in 94 (can't remember at the moment). They also ordered evacuations about 5 hours before Charley landfall. They made it "voluntary" cause it was way too late for the mandatory thing.

For those of you who stated your ages...I have socks older than you! Ah to be young again....

Actually, I'd love to be you!! Livin' in the Keys... Man, what a life. Fortunately, you have to deal with these situations only about three weeks out of every 104!! When you consider it in that perspective, it's a small price to pay for living in paradise.
