Eyewall Replacement?

#1 Postby MWatkins » Sun Aug 29, 2004 9:36 am

Looks like the eye is filling a little over the last few frames...probably seeing an eyewall replacement cycle underway.

A couple of questions if you don't mind? Does that mean it's intensifying? Does the eye grow larger with these cycles? What are the implications of an eyewall replacement?

Don't know how recent this sat image is, but looked to me like her eye was getting really contracted here. Though eyewall replacement was likely as well.

Eyewall replacement means that an outer band of thunderstorms have developed. These will migrate towards the centre and replace the old eye wall. Intensity decreases I think during the process but intensification occurs afterwards.

Here is a good link that should explain the process and its implications:-

It won't strengten until the cycle is over. In fact, it will probably weaken some during it. After it is over, it will probably strengthen at least some.

I'm relatively certain a new eyewall replacement cycle has begun. The eye has become ragged and deeper convection is firing further from the center. This will be verified (or denied) by recon shortly.
