Postpone FSU @ Miami game Monday 9/6?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Postpone FSU @ Miami game Monday 9/6?

#1 Postby Storminole » Sun Aug 29, 2004 11:37 am

Everyone will probably agree that whatever happens with Frances, the storm will be long gone from South Florida before Labor Day evening. That being said, I think officials will probably decide to pull the plug on the season opening matchup between Florida State and Miami, slated for kickoff at 8 pm Monday.

The issue is whether they want tens of thousands of football fans planning to pour into South Florida over the weekend. If the game is postponed, hotel rooms reserved by football fans will be freed up for the beach and mobile home dwellers who evacuate.

In 1998, the rule was to err on the side of caution and approaching Hurricane Georges led to a postponement of UM's game hosting UCLA. (The storm passed safely to the south.) The game was instead played as an additional game at the end of the season.

This storm obviously looks to be a more powerful threat than Georges was, so is this a no-brainer call? I think unless Frances takes a dramatic turn to the right in the next day or two, they'll be postponing the Seminoles vs. Hurricanes matchup 'til December.

What's up, 'Nole brother? Looks like it'll be an interesting week... WOULD NOT surprise me one bit to see the game postponed. While I'd be upset (as would a ton of people), there are much more important things than a football game (not many, though). Good point about hotel rooms being freed up due to the cancellation of fans; hadn't thought about that before. Hopefully Frances will defy the predictions of the professional mets on this board and turn North.

I suspect the AD's at both schools will be making
decisions by mid week on this.

Yeah, if we're still in the cone on Tuesday, I'm sure they'll do this.

In a way I'm upset, since I've been jonesing for this game all year. :-) OTOH, I sure wouldn't mind our offense having some more time to get their act together.

Go Canes! :-) :-)

Well, it could be that out DL is just insanely good, but our OL has been getting knocked around a lot, and I'm still uncertain about Brock.

Obviously, I think the Canes will win whenever they play, but opening games against tough opponents are always a bit of a crap shoot.

How did I know that it wouldn't take long until I read something along these lines?

However I'll pass on the invitation to turn this into a football smack talking thread. So I won't mention the way FSU this year is going to make the cocky 'Canes look like a weakly tropical depression marooned over arctic waters.

I think the game will be played. By Tuesday or Wednesday, Frances won't even be sniffing S. FL.

We were discussing this on Warchant.com.....both teams have open dates on Saturday, Sept 11 and again on Saturday, Nov 27. Another option could be a Thurs night game on Sept 9 (if the area hasn't been devastated).

A make-up date in December won't work because the Canes play VA Tech on December 4.

Both teams would probably like the extra time to prepare
for their biggest rival.

Hey! . . . .

#14 Postby WeatherNole » Sun Aug 29, 2004 4:04 pm

My ears were burning.

Is there someone talking about the weather AND the Noles around here??

There may be some lessons learned from Floyd - that is - let NHC do its job and forecast the track. Emergency management's job is to listen to NHC and maybe not evacuate a couple million people, at a HUGE cost, when it's not totally necessary.

As far as weather and the game, it looks like the game won't have a problem, but traffic on I-95 heading south FOR the game may be big problem. It may get postponed.

Now that THAT is out of the way. Talk it up Cane fans. Wait until you meet our linebacking corps this year. McGrew, Nicholson, Davis, Piquion, and especially Sims are going to chow down.

My call is FSU 30 UM 17.

GO Noles!

Mike

Go Canes!! I don't think they will postpone it. Miami isn't a projected landfall site.

All of these scUM fans... bleh!! (JUST KIDDING 'CANES).

marcia, UM postponed their game v. UCLA back in '98 due to Hurricane Georges, even though Georges wasn't expected to target Miami.

I think there is a very good chance that this game will get postponed. The decision will have to be made by Wednesday or Thursday, and I am not so sure the NHC can say 100% that Miami will be out of the woods by then.

I think the current forecast track, if it remains consistent, will lead to a postponement. I think the predicted track would have to turn into a Floyd-style miss--with high confidence in the forecast--for the game to go forward.

The psychological impact of Charley may influence the decision, with added consideration toward how even short-term forecasts can be off. As long as South Florida remains within the margin of error, they may decide to postpone the kickoff. Fortunately, they have a few more days to look at Frances before making the call.

So my call at this point is that the game is more likely than not to be cancelled. And FSU fans will have to wait a little longer before getting to see the Noles.... SCALP 'EM!
