Garage Door Reinforcement

#1 Postby nativeflacracker » Mon Aug 30, 2004 6:26 pm

Would like any input on a last minute solution to re-inforce a garage door? I noticed in the Charley photos/footage that many garage doors were blown in. Would a vehicle inside tight against the door help stop the push? Thanks for any advice!

I saw everyone in my neighborhood do the vehicle trick, no one lost a garage door. But we didn' t have Charley's eye pass through here, we had 80mph with higher gusts.

Back around andrew... my fathers company pioneered the first bracing system for large bay doors for trucks. This same idea is now used on a lot of houses in south fla, that are secured properly!

In essence they are alluminum beams every 4 feet that brace firmly against the door, and hold it in place, and keep it from buckeling.

Definately use a car or 2 to prevent the door from getting blown in or sucked out..Same goes for Large Sliding Glass Doors..If the wind blows a big hole into your home...it could cause the whole roof to come off..That is how many structures look like they actually exploded..

IT depends... what size is the garage door (one, two, 2.5 car's)

How is it attatched...

Is it attatched to the floor well, and then to the outer-wall just above the garage door...

What is the spacing on the beams?

How old is the garage door, and what is the material of it.

Oh, My mistake...

The braces i was refering too are vertical hurricane braces to supplement the normal garage door structure.

Is your garage door made in the past 8 years or so?
Is it made of wood/aluminum/aluminum reinforced with foam core...?

After Andrew a new code went into place that mandated the strength quality, and size of garage doors for this exact reason.

If your door is newer, then it would have been installed up to code. In which case you should generally be fine barring a few rare circumstances.

Tornado, east facing garage with large wind field across from it, or tree or other major debris weakening the structure...

Hope that helps, sorry for the confusion!
