Heading for FL. on Thursday

#1 Postby BBACK » Tue Aug 31, 2004 11:02 pm

We are leaving from Colmbus, OH on Thursday headed for Orlando. Staying overnight in Columbia, SC. We know we will see bad things but does anyone think we would be denied access to Orlando and what should we prep for??

thanks for the input

Well, one thing you might want to prep for is a potentially long stay.

Orlando will easily see winds over 115 mph if the NHC track verifies. My advice is not to go. Evacuations may be ongoing when you get there and they may have all the lanes going one way(like north).

They won't shut down Orlando but it may not be a place you want to be by the week-end. I would think long and hard before leaving Ohio.

Being a fourth gen Floridian and having just gone through the refresher course provided by the University of Charley, I can tell you that you want to be anywhere BUT Florida! My house has two large holes already from Charley, we were without power for five days, and some were out for almost two weeks, stores and businesses weren't open for up to ten days (my business lost a LOT of $$ due to no power for a week), and there were 45 minute gas lines at the few stations that actually had power to pump gas. You only hoped they would still have gas left when it was your turn!

You do **NOT** want to be here before, during, or within a month or two AFTER Frances if she hits central Florida! You will certainly be inconvenienced, uncomfortable, around people who are incredibly stressed out (not just from Frances but we JUST got over Charley and there are people who will lose a lot with homes that are already damaged and covered with only tarps, like myself), and you may endanger yours and your families lives!

If you are coming down for vacation, I would highly suggest a drive west to the mountains! You do NOT want to be here!

Those are all the coastal people getting out of the way. Take the above advise and maybe put off Orlando for next year. Yellowstone is a wonderful alternative ;-)

I knew Orange County (Orlando) emergency management knew something was up at 7pm when they announced on the news that the dump would be open 12 hours a day, 7 days until further notice only accepting Charley debris. You just can't imagine how many missiles we have laying around the sides of the roads. They've even put out a plea for anyone with a pickup truck to please volunteer to help out and transport downed limbs to the dump. For years, I lived on the coast and only got hit with Irene. I move inland and think I'm safer and now we're getting 2 bad ones within 3 weeks!!
