SITUATION REPORT #1
Hurricane Frances
8/31/04, 11:00 am
SITUATION
Hurricane Frances is a dangerous Category 4 Hurricane and is moving westward in the Atlantic Ocean.
The present movement of Hurricane Frances is toward the west near 15 mph. A gradual turn toward the
west-northwest is expected during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 135 mph, with
higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected during the next 24 hours. We all need to keep a close
watch on this Hurricane because the path is still unpredictable. (See attached advisory.)
PASCO COUNTY ACTIONS
The Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring Hurricane Frances. With Labor Day
weekend coming up, EOC Team members need to review their plans now and take preparatory actions to
ensure their readiness to respond to the threat of this powerful hurricane. Based on the current forecast,
our decision point will be Thursday afternoon. Please make sure you have staff available through this
holiday weekend in case we need to activate. Weather updates will be available at the EOC. The next
SITREP will be issued tomorrow morning, unless conditions change significantly today.
STATE ACTIONS
The State Emergency Operations Center is monitoring Hurricane Frances. The State will go to activation
Level 1 on Wednesday and conference calls with the threatened counties and the National Hurricane
Center will begin. No protection actions for citizens have been recommended anywhere in the State at
this point in time.

Remember what happened with Charley. If they tell you to move, then move. Dont ask questions. Its better you get out and it miss you then you stay and it hit you head on.

Hi Rainband, I live about 10-15 miles east of you. I just finished my run to the stores for supplies. Seems like some people in the area are starting to take this seriously but not too many just yet. For example, I was in the camping/outdoor section at wal-mart looking for a few survival essentials and a family was on one of the other aisles close by yelling at their kids that they better be good if they want to go to the beach this weekend. Hope they were planning a trip to Hawaii.

I played tennis with someone who left today for her birthday weekend in the Keys. They took their boat too!

Some people don't even know a Hurricane is nearing Florida or what one is for that matter. Stay safe neighbor, looks like this may be a repeat of Erin but much worse

No fear...yet

I work with the public near Rainband and so far no one in this area seems to be doing too much to prepare the way they did for Charlie. Although there is a bit of conversation about it. I expect everything will pick up tomorrow.

As far as where to go... that is the real dilemma. The entire penisula is at risk at the moment.
