Evacuate

#1 Postby jagesq » Wed Sep 01, 2004 11:29 pm

I know its early, but what are your thoughts on Northeastern Palm Beach County, near the Jupiter Inlet? Should we keep waiting? Im just worried if we wait too long, it'll be too late. Any thoughts comments?

Have you been ordered to evacuate by emergency management? Are you in an evacuation zone?

If so, get the hell out as soon as possible.

This is nothing to play around with. It could potentially be a life or death situation.

My advice is listen to emergency management in your county. If you are ordered to evacuate, get out.

Yes I would get out. I have a friend in Jupiter off indiantown road, and I am very concerned about her. Check out this map here, it outlines the mandatory evac zone in the event of a cat 3-5 hurricane (scroll down past the 1-2 evac zone).

You will be ordered to evac if you are in that red zone, so you might as well get a jump on it tomorrow AM and attempt to beat the rush.

Based on Sanibel's post below regarding the ridge being much deeper than originally estimated, Derek's consistent forecast to S Florida and the NHC shifting south from Jacksonville a day ago to Vero tonight...I would say you should seriously begin at least preparing to evacuate.

Shoot, I am in Rockledge and am still probably heading out of town! Frances is not a storm you can do a "Lt. Dan" with.

I wouldnt wait too much longer. If she stays on the current track which is more then likely, your area will be much affected and it may be too late to get out tomorrow evening and into Friday.

Just my opinion, but if i were in your shoes i would be getting out now or sometime before rush hour in the morning. Pandemonium is about to grip the entire east coast, if not the whole state, and all floridians know there are very limited options for escape. If you decide to go, don't wait too long. Stay safe.

I am 4 miles from the coast, literally just on the other side of the evacuation zone. Most of my friends are leaving tommorrow, and it looks like I may, but the question is where? You can't go north or south, that could be just as bad if not worse. And there are no hotel reservations available. My friend made a reservation at the Ritz Carlton on Miami Beach. Hmm, not a good idea IMO.

Yes I am very concerned about places to go for ppl in the Palm Beach area, because nobody really knows if it will hit PB, or go north or south of PB. And by the time we do know, we will be within 24 hours of landfall, which is way too late to start leaving....

If you do leave, don't plan on stopping until you get past the Florida state line... Orlando is a very bad decision too.

jagesq, find a way to get as far north as possible, monitor the storms progress and adjust your final route from there. When Charley was heading my way I was prepared to ride it out but I made hotel reservations in Atlanta just in case I decided to bug out.

This is very confusing indeed. I hope this doesnt come directly for us or else im screwed i guess. Because its not my decision to evacuate, its my parents. And they say it wont be that bad and that we will be ok.

When Charley hit Punta Gorda, my mom in Stuart, FL took in some friends. Now they are returning the favor. She's bugging out in the morning. I'm NW of Orlando, we're going to ride it out here. But if I still lived on the Treasure Coast in Hobe Sound, I'd be long gone...

Yep its difficult

I still remember many people, including myself that went south to ride out Andrew when we were right in the crosshairs. That was scary my friend. I let my hubris and stupidity and overall feeling of invincibility prevent me from taking this too seriously. Now however, I must say i am thoroughly SPOOKED!!

Why would they think a Cat 4/5 hurricane "Wouldn't be bad"
Will you be in the mandatory evacuation zone tomorrow?

When your parents see half the town packing up and leaving tomorrow, they will probably be whistling a different tune.

If you are ready to go, you might as well go as soon as possible, since they are also beginning evacs south of you and traffic will not be improving. Do make sure you have a good map--and since you will be leaaving before a specific strike zone has really been set, keep an open mind about where you might end up. Might be worthwhile to try and get 2 (cancellable) hotel reservations in different locations so you can choose later based on better info whether to press farther or not.

Dont underestimate the stubborness of "old florida see dogs" that have ridden them all out. My parents are good examples. Unfortunately these are the whackos who usuallly get themselves hurt...or worse.

I'm leaving tommorrow, with or without the parents.

That is a smart move. Riding out a Cat 4 storm is NOT FUN, just ask the people on the other coast from you. I heard so many people say that if they knew it would be this bad, they would have left during the aftermath of Charley.
