Pet Friendly Hotels

#1 Postby Stephanie » Wed Sep 01, 2004 12:07 pm

This will be in the newsletter, but there are hotels that are "pet friendly".

Here's one link that lists hotels in Florida that do welcome pets.

http://www.1clickpethotels.com/florida.htm

There are several hotel chains that accept pets - Super 8 is one of them.

I COULDN'T IMAGINE the horror and guilt I would feel if I had to evacuate and leave my pets at home. I'd probably end up staying.

Thank you for posting that information! Even though I'm no where near Florida, I can only imagine what a life-saver having that information would be! I could never leave my poor animals behind...

There's another couple of good alternatives to staying in hotels. There are vacation rental websites like http://www.vrbo.com that have places for rent and some take pets. A lot of these places are booked during the season but not so much this time of year. Some of them will negotiate with you for just a few days' lodging if you tell them you're a hurricane refugee.

I have no ownership of the site but have two properties listed there, and in the past I have taken in people who evacuated for Floyd, and allowed them to keep a dog. Normally I do not allow pets but in this instance I was happy to, as I know shelters won't allow animals (something I do not agree with).

Anyway this is not to promote my properties but to let you know about a possible pet-friendly resource other than hotels.

Lowes hotels are very pet friendly. No limit of animals, no restrictions of any kind as long as you have documentation of shot record

Most people forget that most shelter do not allow pets (thats the case in NC anyway) During Floyd, many pets were rescued from flooding water but never made it back to their owner because they did not have tags. If you must leave your pet when you evacuate, good idea to make sure they have a tag with your name, number and address.

I didn't check out the prices, but I would probably spend whatever I could just to get them away from the storm.

If you are in Brevard County FL (Melbourne/Cocoa Beach area), the county now provides free emergency shelters (pets only) for residents that are ordered to evacuate and have no place to take their pets.

Their website is:

http://www.brevardanimalservices.com

then click on "Pet Friendly Evacuation Shelter"

Please do not leave your pets at home on the barrier islands!

Pets in Orlando

#14 Postby Sissy » Wed Sep 01, 2004 7:14 pm

If you are in the Orlando area, the Travelodges take pets. And they are about $45 dollars per night.

Hope this helps,

I just booked a hotel in Homestead just in case and they take pets, no size restrictions or limit on how many from what I gathered. It's called The Floridian and the number is 305-245-1260. Dirt cheap too so if you go, make sure to take your own sheets, pillowcases and towels!

I couldn't leave my Golden behind, no way. She's beside me right now! This topic almost makes me wish I lived in an area people were evacuating to - here I'll take your pet(s) until you can return home. I wonder if that would be a campaign to start? Someone with a fenced yard already, could accept other dogs temporarily. I know I'd drop off everything that was needed, as if my dog was going to the kennel, food, bones, toys, blanket, etc. All the person/volunteer would have to do is make sure my dog was sheltered, provide water and keep it safe.

Making sure your pets have their tags on their collar is timely reminder. You can also have a micro chip inserted under the collar area, behind their neck (this is where my dog's chip is). We had this done when she was spayed. But I think it's a minor procedure, the chip is inserted thru a needle. Very noninvasive. No time for chips this Hurricane, but in the future I recommend this tag option too.

If anyone is interested, Volusia County, FL generally opens a pet shelter at the Volusia County Fairgrounds (corner of I-4 and S.R. 44) during an activation.
