Situation here in Stuart

#1 Postby BPJR051 » Thu Sep 02, 2004 8:30 am

I'm Disaster Management Coordinator at Stuart PD. Evacuations start here at noon. Our staff will be going to 12 hour shifts starting tommorow at 1100. I'll be at the Martin County EOC during the storm so I should be able to keep everyone posted on what is happening.

I would like to pass on some information I had posted two days ago. In light of the board-up material shortage, it may prove useful. My family has owned porperty on Hutchinson Island since 1979. I am fully aware of what a direct strike means. I am also very aware of the construction materials and methods that were used in the '70's on the Island. Anyone considering staying on the Island would be committing suicide. I even have concerns over the FPL Plant's ability to withstand the storm surge. I don't imagine Conchy Joes is going to fair too well. Any post storm info you might be able to obtain about Hutchinson Island would be most deeply appreciated. Everyone down there is in our thoughts and prayers. Good Luck and stay safe!

I'm a little conerned about what you posted about the FPL's facility on Hutchinson Island. Can you say home to nuclear reactor? Does anyone know how a hurricane of this magnitude would do this reactor?

Nuke Plant

The St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant can sustain a direct hit w/o any damage to the containment buildings or the core. They will sustain heavy damage to property and their buildings but don't worry about radiation leaks, it won't happen.

I wouldn't be too concerned about that. Reactor facilities are designed to withstand an F-5 tornado.

I remember some controversy that came about when Floyd grazed the coast. The reactors will certainly be shut down, so there is no danger of a meltdown, or steam discharge. The engineering data apparently indicated that the containment building was desighned to withstand a 180mph wind. Further investigation revealed that it was designed to withstand momentary windloading of 180mph, not sustained. A breach of the containment building could possibly release radioactive heavy water. Under Hurricane conditions, it would be spread very far. While the concentration would be low, cleanup would be all but impossible, and the effects to wildlife, in particular, fish and shellfish would be of great

I was a bit unsure about the nuclear side of things...posted a message a few days ago about it as was worried about the nuclear facility on fragile Hutchenson Island....what happens if the island is washed away in part....I guess the foundations are pretty deap?

I spent last 2 new year's in Conchy Joes.....and was eating there recently...went snorkling at Bathtub last week.....and took a ride along the Intercoastal to Lake Oke*.....just got the photos developed.....sigh!

My heart goes out to those particularly with properties on Hutchison Island....they are gorgeous places.....especially the older places...with a storm surge of 30 feet possibly expected....never mind the wind.....enough said....

Look forward to any updates re Stuart area as currently in the UK working.....and feel very helpless here!

Thank you--my folks evac Stuart yesterday to here. They are very much looking forward to updates, and very relieved to hear you will be posting.

Best wishes to you.
