This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I am so confused! Please help

#1 Postby decgirl66 » Thu Sep 02, 2004 10:29 am

Hi, I live in Geneva, which is closer to Titusville than any other city I can think of. Maybe 30 miles from Orlando. Our bosses at my job, in Lake Mary, are now walking around smiling with a map saying we will only get like 35 mile an hour winds with it going S of Ft Lauderdale. Do you think it will stay on this path, or does anyone see it changing again to the NW?

Just wonderin....

anyone walking around with a map smiling should probably be smacked with a 2 x 4.... this thing is still a day or so out and it is NOT an exact science...

Smiling because they are scared

They are smiling because they are scared.

A slight, very slight, wobble will blow that map they are carrying out of their hands.

I don't agree with that. I'm not confident about what you'll get. I don't believe you'll have the 145 mph winds, but I would expect hurricane force winds, and possibly gusts over 100 mph. The only way you'll only get low-end TS force winds is if it hits Miami and goes due west without turning. It's forecast to still be a hurricane(Cat 1) between Ocala and Orlando Sunday Morning.

Just FWIW... the NHC takes it inland NORTH of Fort Lauerdale up around Vero Beach, MUCH MUCH closer to you.

Have a look at this: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/ ... -headlines

If I was your boss...this would certainly wipe a smile of my face...remember what happened to Charley...,.it fell short of Tampa by 100miles....the hurricane is 400 miles wide! I think the eye is about 20miles wide but it may have grown... Orlando is far from safe!

I live in Lake Mary and work for Seminole County Public Safety. We are expecting winds in excess of 100 mph in this area for a sustained period of time. Geneva is closer to the coast and should be even more prepared. If your idiot bosses want to know what to expect tell them to call emergency management.

'smacked with a 2x4'

IF you can find a 2x4 that is not nailed or about to be nailed on a window in SE Fla, I'll give you $100...May be better to use a baseball bat (aluminum) :)

You work for some ignorant people.

Tell them to look at the official NHC forecast.

I'm not a geography expert, but the latest probabilities show that Cocoa Beach (which I think is near you) has a 21% overall chance of having the center of the storm pass within 75 miles of you. West Palm is the highest of the FL locations, with a 23% chance. The NHC doesn't think you're in the clear.

Hurricane force winds extend out 80 miles from the center and TS force winds go out nearly 200 miles.

If they're right about the landfall location, you may luck out, but given the overall uncertainty that still exists with the storm track, I think it's awfully irresponsible of your employer to be so smug.

There's still too much uncertainty about the track forecast for anyone to get too cocky about where this monster is going.
