Still in shock and terrified as well- - -

#1 Postby Texasblu » Thu Sep 02, 2004 8:20 am

I'm new to FL, transplanted from Illinois, to Texas, and now FL. I just came thru Charley here in Charlotte County. It was a terrifying experience. What does this hurricane bode for Charlotte County. I've been reading all the posts, but after awhile, it gets confusing. Please advise and thank you.

This is a large storm, and, based upon its current forecast track, it is likely to exit western Florida close to you. It is very difficult to forecast how much intensity a storm will lose as it crosses land. My best advice for you is to prepare for 140 mph winds at your location. I don't think that is very likely, but if you prepare for that and experience less I doubt you will curse because you prepared for the worst. ;)

Texasblu ... you will be in my thoughts and prayers. While my own family & friends are in Palm Beach Co., I also am praying for all those affected by Charley that they would be spared from Frances.

BTW... I don't think you are alone in being shocked & horrified. These two Cat 4 back to back storms have shaken the most seasoned FL veterans I think. Truly an exceptional/worst-case scenario that is hard to believe is happening. At least perhaps one good thing came from Charley. I think those lessons are helping people better prepare for Frances. I hope so.

It shouldn't be near as bad as Charley, but you should prepare like it is. Right now it looks like you'll be in SW part of the circulation, a good ways from the eye. There will probably still be tropical storm force winds and of course a lot of rain(more than with Charley because it was moving quick and was small).

Two category four hurricanes hitting the same state a few weeks apart is vanishingly rare. If Frances does make landfall as a category 4 in FL, it will mark the only time in the last century that two category 4 or higher hurricanes have struck the same state within weeks of each other.

Is there any chance of this thing doing a Donna? I've looked at the tracks and they seem pretty close. I know there is a lot more involved in than just that, but I'm curiouse as to the opinions of it possibly happening.

Cape Escape:

So far no Donna track. Still generally up a west-adjusted NHC track. Officials calling Vero Beach landfall.

Left deviation still possible. Stay on guard...
