This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Ranking Storms by Size as well as Intensity

#1 Postby MBryant » Thu Sep 02, 2004 7:37 pm

I just wanted to start a thread to discuss the best way to catagorize storms by strength.

Frances is a much larger storm than Charlie just as Carla was huge compared to either.

Would the TS force wind spread or Hurricane force wind spread be better etc?
Diameter of wind shield vs area of wind shield?

Gale force winds from Brownsville to High Island is often used to describe her size. Your Thoughts?

Oops...I meant to say size, not strength

She's a BAB: Big Azz Beyotch. Good question. Perhaps weight the hurricane force diameter and the tropical storm diameter (or area, your choice) accordingly (say, 60/40 or 70/30) as part of the equation?

The one thing that sticks in my mind about Hurricane Gilbert in '88 was it's huge size.

This is amazing ... I was just thinking about this issue this morning ...

My idea was that a really easy categorization for people to relate to would be to use breast cup sizes ... for example, an Andrew would be a Cat 5 A, Charley was a Cat 4 A, while Frances is a Cat 4 D. Worst possible would be a Cat 5 DD.

I think it would be especially easy for we single-track-minded men to get a "grasp" (so to speak) of this categorization system. :-)

Opinions?

Was also thinking about this as well and maybe throw in an element of the forward speed as a component, since the heavy rain is a result of the speed the storm moves through.
