It's definitely there, just covered with some sort of stratus or cirrus.

It's right over Cat Island. I'm expecting it to pop out any time now ... probably just some cirrus cover over it.

there is some shear over the storm from the SW. Not very intense, but maybe enough to keep this as a 4 or a strong 3. still may relax before landfall though so everyone should prepare for a 4 or a 5

0215 UTC Satellite Update....still no eye, but convection looks a little more impressive in this frame.

Didn't the same thing happen with Hurricane Opal in 1995? Even as a Category 4, Opal appeared to have no eye on visible satellite. But radar indicated an 11-mile eye.

11pm discussion states that convection has cooled significantly since the last recon, so the weakening appears to be temporary.

I really don't remember exactly, but I do recall something of that nature. I do remember how Opal EXPLODED in no time though!

Opal weakened as it approached FL because it was Oct. and water temps. were lower in the northern GOM.
