Update from the Ortt apartment

#1 Postby Derek Ortt » Fri Sep 03, 2004 10:55 am

Had a very brief power outage (less than 1 min) with the fist outer squall. I estimate we had gusts to 25-30 m.p.h. associated with it, nothing major and it only lasted for ~3 mins

Thanks for the report, Derek. Looks like the start of a very long weekend.

Derek, here in Brevard we still have beautiful sunshine, but my fellow science teacher friend just came back from the beach near Patrick AFB and said that the waves are already impressive. He is going back out to film some video... and see if he can't find Jim Cantore!
He said that A1A was deserted... except for a news crew shooting pictures of the Atlantic.
He lives in Merritt Island (which is why he is at our house in Melbourne, now) and reported only 5 cars when he went back to his apartment for a few minutes(apparently the causeways are still open).

After 8:30 tonight, the police will be arresting anybody out and about. A policeman neighbor said that they are very concerned about looting on the barrier islands by "lowlifes" who see the storm as an awesome opportunity dropped into their laps! Merritt Island is unicorporated, so there is no police force other than the Sheriff's Dept to protect all those nice homes.

Nothing at all in North Miami Beach. Sunny and calm all morning.

Any surfer sightings? When even they aren't going out (they usually love approaching tropical storms because they can chase the big waves then) it's a sign that the state is taking a storm very seriously.

I'm already tired of the surfer and bather stories. Now that we're in wait and wait more mode, the TV stations have nothing to do (so they seem to think) other than to go out and harrass the very very few people who are going near the water.

There are a million other stories right now -- people having trouble evacuating, conditions in shelters, accidents, advice -- and to put such empahsis on "I can't believe people are in the water" sequences is just stupid.

Everyone be safe.

I stayed at the Marriot in Ft. Lauderdale on A1A in April this year. It was a beautiful hotel. :(
