Frances, IMHO, is the MOST important national news story today in America.
But national media outlets cannot talk about it *to the exclusion* of other national news. On a minute-to-minute basis right now all they can do is say "strengthening, with a westerly-ish track" over and over again. Once the storm gets closer (in the coming hours) they will refocus a bit, I bet.

Judging from what little I've seen on national TV (since I've been glued to this message board LOL) ...Hurricane Frances definitely IS the big story...but a past president facing BIG heart surgery (quadruple bypass is about is big as you get) is also significant news everywhere else. I mean no disrespect, but listening to the exact same information over and over and over and over again really gets old...unless you're hooked on this message board or facing the eye of the storm.
But I know that when Isabel was coming in our direction last year, I listened more to local whether forecasters than to national news stations as the storm approached...so I would kind of doubt that they're doing any huge disservice to Floridians by airing the Clinton information.

Exactly... And it was the only point I was trying to address. (ie "disservice)

As a member of The Media (gasp!), I was surprised that CNN this morning was clearly gearing up for bigtime hurricane coverage (two correspondents in West Palm, 1 in Lauderdale, 1 in Cape Canaveral, 1 in the Bahamas).
The Clinton story *is* big news, especially for the rest of the country, as others have said. But I think CNN is doing a good job of going back and forth. And I'm guessing later today they'll shift back toward Frances coverage. (and with Frances both slowing down and reorganizing a bit, they'll have plenty of time to go overboard!)
If anyone has a right to be irked about the coverage today, it'll be Bush-Cheney, since this should really be their day of coverage (first day campaigning after the convention). But Bubba and Frances will take care of that.
And as others have said, you shouldn't be using the national outlets to get your info if you're in the path of the storm.

As a news reporter, political columnist, feature writer and weather reporter for decades, I still say -- considering the thousands of lives at stake -- Hurricane Frances is THE most important national story this weekend.

Maybe the media's thinking...
"Yesterday...145 mph...possible Cat 5 on FL.........Today...115 and dropping....must not be as important"
I'm still seeing tons of coverage on the News this afternoon though....

I hate to disappoint you but Frances is NOT the most important news story in the USA. Outside this forum and outside Florida there's a whole world with people going about their daily lives many of whom couldn't tell you the difference between Melbourne, Florida and Melbourne, Australia; most of whom are more concerned with their own weather than what happens to Florida.

Clinton eats too many burgers
Bush accepts nomination
Unemployment falls to 5.4%
144,000 new jobs in August
July job numbers readjusted to 75,000 from 32,000
Which means next month will say August new jobs were 180,000
Oh yeah, Hurricane near Florida
I think there's a section for political nastiness.

Stupid??
This storm is a Hurricane Alex right now....the media wasn't "all up in arms" covering Hurricane Alex for crying out loud!!
Fortunately this is a more "run of the mill" cane, not that it can't still do damage. It just won't be historic damage, and for the people of FL thank God for that!!!
The hard facts are that the US is routinely hit by Cat 1/2 hurricanes, which Frances will likely be by this evening.
Thus, I would assume the media may not cover this story as aggressively as say Hurricane Charely, or for sure Hurricane Andrew.
It's all about strength and climatolgy. US is often hit by storms like Frances is right now....they are NOT often hit by storms that Frances once was.

Look, I don't know you, but you're not in FLa.
I really don't think the cat 1/2 rating is truly indicative of the consequences.
Even with Derek Ortts hopeful forecast of 105mph at landing, that means TS-Hurricane force winds in the Orlando area.
The sheer size of this monster means that damage (while maybe not awesome) will be very widespread in a heretofore unseen swath.
Central florida "only" took about 2-3 hours worth of hurricane force winds 3 weeks ago.
What was stressed by those conditions will have been weakened, and dealing with TS to hurracane conditions for a period of up to 24hrs will be a challenge to put it mildly.
I suggest that at the very least, you are ignorant of the condition of the residents and infrastructure in the affected area.
I really feel that while Mr. Clinton may be close to the heart of many around the world, a population of an entire US State is in harm's way...
I think Mr. Clinton would even agree.
Please consider the disruption of life here, and politics are insignificant.
