They told me it was rising water from rain. That would exclude surge.

They continuously said "rain."

Homeowner's will not cover flooding. Flood insurance is purchased from National Flood but you can go through your agent. If you are not in a flood zone, then there is no need for flood insurance.

Some homeowner policies will cover contents that are damaged by flooding.

Most people do not know that their computers and some electronic equipment are not covered under their homeowner policy. You have to add electronics to the policy, especially computers.

Jewelry and paintings are also sometimes not covered. You must buy an umbrella policy to protect valuables.

Above is the Allstate way. Not all insurance companies are as strict.

This is NOT true! Every house in Florida is in a flood zone. Some are just lower risks then others. However, about 25-30% of floods happen in those areas.

Well then flood insurance is needed if that is the case. Each state is different Deena.

Everyone is in a flood zone. The previous poster is correct, approx. 25 to 30% of all claims happen in the 500 year flood zone.

And I don't know of any homeowner policies that cover flooding other than mobile home policies.

If someone is in the 500 year flood zone flood insurance can be purchased for @$350.00 or less per year. Not much of an investment to protect your home IMO.

Like I stated above obx, all states are different. Contact your local agent for more info in your area.

insurance question

#28 Postby obxicane » Fri Sep 03, 2004 5:08 pm

I am my agent. I know people who thought they would never need flood insurance who were devastated by Floyd.

Something to consider.

All of Florida is not a flood zone. Only those in flood zones are required to get flood insurance. My house is not in one. We're fairly elevated (for FL, lol). Thanks for everyone's 2cents. :)

As I stated above, if you need to purchase the flood insurance then you can. Personally, I do not have flood. If I was in doubt, I would purchase it.

I do understand what you are saying though and I agree it is a good idea.

You are an agent? Which company?

I've seen what flooding can do so I admit my bias up front.

Every inch of Florida is in a Flood Zone, the National Flood Insurance Program maps every area of every state. Your zone may not be a high risk zone, but everyone is is a flood zone. 80% of all flood claims paid by the NFIP are policies that are in the non high risk flood zone. If you live in florida or anywhere near the coast, you are making a foolish decision if you decide not to buy.

To all that say wind driven rain ( such as blowing through your vents) is covered.....YOUR wrong, Only specific types of policies cover that

Wind has to CREATE the opening. that allows water or debris to penetrate the home

The clear answer is to READ your policy!!!!!!!!,
It is amazing how many people in Florida that I have seen have not even opened thrie insurance policies...Still sealled in the envelopes the insurance company mailed them in.
