UPDATE MELBOURNE 6:30

#1 Postby chris_fit » Sat Sep 04, 2004 5:32 am

I just got woken up by HOWLING WINDS (50-60mph) and torrential rain battering my window.

Power is flickering.

This does not look good.

It IS NASTY OUT THERE.

stay safe.

My first post here.
I have very dear friends who moved to Melbourne about 2 years ago to take care of a parent. The parent who they are supposed to be taking care of left Melbourne on his own Wed. (92 year old gentleman) He is in Tallahassee right now. He had enough sense to take care of himself.
Our friends (brother and sister would be a better description, we are that close) didn't have enough sense to go with his dad. I don't want anyone there to suffer any loss, but I do hope that those there get the living he!! scared out them. This system was heading right for you a few days ago as a potential cat 5. None of you should be there right now, especially when you could be in WV drinking beer watching the reports come in.
May this storm be enough to impress people, but at the same time, no one suffer any harm.

I'm glad you don't want anyone to get hurt. But in fairness to those who are sitting this out on the east coast of Florida (your friends notwithstanding, who I agree should be with their parent), it is impossible for EVERYONE living on the east coast of FL to bug out. Most of the folks who are still there are probably not in evacuation zones and were told by EOC to prepare and sit tight. They made the best decisions they could, given the info at hand. Perhaps not the same choice you or I would have made, but in many cases the ones that the emergency managers encouraged. I am quite sure that at least 95% of the people are doing the very best they can to stay safe and avoid disaster.

You are right some people can't leave. The roads are jammed, hotel are booked, the airport is shut down and gas is in short supply. When you sitting in jammed roads, a tank of gas doesn't go too far.

Besides, the track has changed so many times. Last Wednesday it was a direct hit for Daytona, today it looks like we may just get some tropical force winds and rain.
