This is my first time posting. We are not expected to get the brunt of this storm but it is still getting bad here. It is very windy and rainy and my power has flickered on and off a few times already. I am nervous.

hang in there...put on some music and try to relax...
If you have made all the preparations that you can make there is nothing else you can do but hang in there. Even when you are not getting the worst of it, it can be very stressful.

As someone else mentioned, if the storm starts to get really loud in your area, headphones with your fav music or an audiobook are a helpful distraction.

That is why I love this board. I am a newbie as well, just registered beginning of last week, found it looking for info on Frances. Everyone here is so helpful and supportive.

I am a total dork when it comes to this kind of thing, just go by what the TV says, but not anymore!

Birdwoman, that was good advice. I am in Central Fla, and it is already getting windy. We have done all we can do, just gotta watch mother nature now...

Well, its about 8 in the morning here. Very bleak outside..raining hard and very gusty winds. I have a weather station and it's reporting winds of 33 mph. I had a gust yesterday of 59.5. It's rather balmy..outdoor temp of 76.2 with 87% humidity. Barometer is 29.66 and falling.

Although it looks like we'll get a hurricane, it's nothing like I thought it was going to be 3 days ago. A cat 5 (perfect storm) barrelling into us. Huddling under your mattress in your closet while you're roof blows off. Yes, its going to be bad, damage, etc. but not horrific Andrewesque stuff on a widescale. Not that I think anyway.

I reaaalllllyyyy hope I don't lose power because I will surely go into internet withdrawal and then stuck in the house.

I hope to be able to go out of my porch and watch the weather. That will keep me entertained.

The Post says the storms eye broke up:

Hurricane Frances fractured into a lumbering mess of disjointed but powerful wind bands Saturday morning, moving ever closer to the South Florida coast.

With the eye knocked down by wind shear and not expected to return, Frances' traditional structure collapsed, National Hurricane Center director Ed Rappaport said. The storm that had been in South Floridians' faces now for nearly a week would not be a solid area of rain and wind, but rather a series of squalls, coming more frequently and stronger, he said.

Why are you guys so nervous? I have been going outside off and on during the storm, and its so exciting! But its starting to get worse and worse out...

Just relax....I'm sure the gusts are unsettling for those who have never seen a tropical system before. It's funny, I've lived here my whole life, and with the winds out of the NW like this, it almost feels like more of a vigorous frontal low......like something we'd get in an El Nino winter.

Another thing, I've seen a number of tropical systems come and go - and this one does not seem as *warm* as the others......when Andrew came it was a complete blast of hot, humid air - same with Georges, Irene, Floyd, David, Kate, every hurricane that's either hit or clipped this area. With this one, though, the temps are actually quite comfortable. I went running on the beach yesterday, and it actually started to get a little chilly. Same with this morning - the winds are a little cooler and more comfortable than with most tropical systems.
