Hurricane nothing!

#1 Postby Windfall » Sat Sep 04, 2004 2:31 pm

Hardly anything going on here in Miami. :grr: I'll be back around 4:30 to see what's going on. I guess I'll have to wait for Ivan if I wanna see some action.

Have you ever experienced a hurricane where you weren't sure the house was going to hold together? I have, and I'd be pleased if I never again see any "action."

I'm sure millions of people in Miami don't agree. It wasn't forecast to hit you anyway. Your on the weak side of the hurricane.

Maybe you'd be a good candidate for a project I'm looking to do. This project involves intense interaction with hurricanes. The thought is to get a boat and deam it the Hurricane Hunter Boat. It will have as its flag a black skull and bones pirate flag, because lets face it, that's the coolest flag for a boat. The mission of the HHB will be to go into the middle of a storm and report constantly on the conditions in the eye and eyewall.

I'm looking for people to
(1) Pay for everything
(2) Go on it after signing me their lives
(3) Raid the coasts in the offseason.

Acting Direction of the Hurricane Hunter Boat Project

I'm sorry, but this qualifies as "the Pinhead thread" of the year. I hope you're kidding.

I am not even in the main path of the storm and I am very concerned about my family, my house that has major roof damage already from Charley, my relatives and their damaged homes. I can't believe the callousness of someone who is dissappointed that the haven't gotten "any action!!" It is predicted that my worst will be 75-85 mph winds, but that will be over 6-8 hours. The first few feeder bands have blown through and I have seen trees under signifincant stress. I have many LARGE trees behind my house that were already weakened by Charley, and those could also come down on my house. I am completely boarded up, and I am still worried. It's only going to get worse!

I am very sorry for those who are going to, and are getting worse "action" than me. I **WISH** I wasn't going to get "any action!!" :grr:

ahh, the ole "wanting a hurricane" vs. "I Just went through {insert cane here} and BELIEVE ME you don't want that" holy war. I suppose these happen no matter which forums you go to. heh.

cheers,

Windfall

I've had some experience..

#12 Postby Windfall » Sat Sep 04, 2004 2:53 pm

I was in charley also. I was staying with a relative and i witnessed at least 74+ mph winds near wauchula and arcadia. the location i was in was on the east side. That was my first hurricane experience. I had mixed feelings of shock and awe while witnessing its power. I want to have another chance to see a hurricane since Charley moved in and out of my area in less that 3 hours since it was moving NE at 20 mph. As long as there is no real flooding potential and you are not in a mobile home or weak structure, witnessing the fury of hurricanes can be awesome to watch, like a horror movie.

Hey, I can understand Windfall's thoughts.
We all love weather. If we didn't want to experience the fury in some form, we wouldn't study it.
Just because he is disappointed that he is not witnessing this marvel of nature, does not mean he doesn't care about its power or effects on the lives of others.
If someone hasn't directly experienced it, how can one effectively help to determine the proper actions to take in its wake?
As amateur analysts, we also want hard facts to support our hypothesis. Windfall just wants some hard facts that he can personally verify. There is a difference between personal experience and theoretical/statistical study.
Do many people put down the storm chasers that track tornadoes just because they want to study them? I think not even those that have had the direct experience think that storm chasers are callous or unfeeling.
Windfall, maybe you wish you were here, but I can't guarantee results

You must be one of those that slows down, or stops, in front of me for a nasty car wreck just to see the blood on the road because it's "awesome to watch."

Oh, and I had winds of 105 mph north of Orlando which caused major destruction in my neighborhood. I don't consider that "awesome to watch!"

I can understand windfall's thoughts also. I have been evacuated from my home in Homestead since 4pm Thursday because of the threat of Frances. We had to shutter the house, stock up on supplies, be totally displaced, have anxiety over this storm for several days now. In my opinion, it would be nice to have a bit of the storm to feel like all that was for something. It's hard to be out of your house for, essentially, no reason. The most we've had here in the Kendall area is some wind, but not much more than we have in an afternoon thunderstorm. I don't necessarily want a direct hit, but something more than we have on an afternoon basis would be nice considering the $$, time, and displacement that has occurred all over Dade county.

I also understand Windfalls thinking. We have a lot of folks here that are not here just to get news of the current situatuion but are lifelong weather nuts. I am one of them. I went throught typhoon Pamela in Guam and Hurricane Alicia in Baytown, Tx. I stayed put(No choice on the Pamela storm) but I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything as a person that loves all aspects of the weather and weather forecasting. Sure people are going to die and lose the most valuable things they own. We can't change that, and we sure don't wish that on anyone, but I don't think that has anything to do with what Winfall was trying to say. Wanting to experience something like this is totally different from wanting people to suffer bad outcomes. It's going to happen, he just wants to see it's fury. Just like you do thru the media. Not seeing it isn't going to make it go away.
