Night Time Landfall is Frightning

#1 Postby EverythingIsEverything » Sat Sep 04, 2004 3:42 pm

I remember hurricane Gloria as a small child and hearing the wind howl through the windows was the most horrifying noise..as well as hearing things crash and not knowing what it was..you couldnt see anything. Francis is making for a very long night.

Charley came across us at around 10pm. It is definitely scarier at night, although being surrounded by large trees might make it scarier if I have to watch them and worry.

Scarier, yes. But I've heard it stated that because less people go siteseeing in a storm at night, there is less likelihood of fatalities.

I was 8 years for Hurricane Andrew in 92.

I do remember the howling wind.... scary noises. The worst was hearing our tree crack in the backyard and snap in half and miss our house by like a foot and that was at like 4 am.

You can't tell what is going on. I do remember my dad going outside just before that at like 2 am and the wind was amazing.

Hang in there and remember it won't last forever. I can't reach my folks in WPB on the phone, but they have been through a lot of hard times and I know they will get though this.

I hate seeing my hometown get torn up.

Seems every storm I've been through - Betsy, Camille, Fredrick, Elena, Georges - all made landfall at night. The one thing that always sticks in my mind's eye is that awareness at dawn when the first light reveals an entirely, completely, and incredibly different world than what it was just the evening before.
