Frances moves slowly toward Florida
Saturday, September 4, 2004

Hurricane Frances is moving slowly west-northwest and is expected to make landfall near Vero Beach early Sunday morning.

The Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of 105 mph.

Its effects are being felt on the east coast of Florida, with hurricane-force winds of at least 74 mph 70-80 mph. The latest track has it making landfall at 2 a.m. Sunday somewhere between West Palm Beach and Vero Beach.

The center of the storm is expected to go through the Bay area Sunday afternoon, but it should be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it moves near Mulberry. It could take nearly 12 hours for it to go from Polk County into the Gulf of Mexico.
