Pretty Quiet In Here....

#1 Postby Ixolib » Sun Sep 05, 2004 6:09 am

At 6:12am (CST) there are only 16 registered and 34 guest users on this board. In the middle of a strom like this, you'd think there would be plenty more. It must be that many - if not most - no longer have power and/or cable. Even with battery backup, I guess the dial-ups may not have a connection either...

I am here, but its been unusually quiet here all night. I am in Ormond Beach and getting some strong gusts. Not much to do for now except spend time on the internet.

I'm here in the sunny(for once!)U.K.

don't worry w've had a terrible time here as well recently,so it's not just florida having a bad time.

We have had constant ex-hurricanes here during August,we had ex-Alex,ex-bonnie,partly ex-Charley and ex-Danielle.

Ex-bonnie gave parts of Scotland 5 inches in 24 hours and also gave Boscatsle 204MM in just 6 hours, truely hurricane porportions.

Hope you guys are safe, from sunny Britian!

When I woke at five it was quiet. Maybe some are finally getting some sleep. Its breezy in Tampa and the lights flickered on and off.

Looking at channel nine in Miami (via live streaming video), looks like Melborne's getting hammered right now. I believe this slow mover is surprising many with the awesome power of these things. I hope everyone's faring as well as possible.........

It is eerie to see only 55 or so people on when normally at least 100-150 would be on by now to get storm updates.

Sleep is necessary

#7 Postby elvinp » Sun Sep 05, 2004 6:33 am

But up after 4 hours sleep, but little to report from NW Tampa. No heavy rain or squalls. Actualy it is breezy, but not much more than a winter cold front coming through. Radar indicates more rain later this morning. Power has been solid all night. We are just waiting for Frances to get closer probably late PM.

Am in the UK too, beautiful sunny day no cloud or wind in sky...in the 80's which is unusual for UK in september....hardly any sleep for the last week....had a huge party last night....2hours sleep as worried about situation in Jensen! Could hardly have got any closer to my place.....

Yes the UK has suffered from aftermath of USA hurricanes recently....

I guess it is so quiet as people are have lost power, people asleep as exhausted from preparing for hurricane!

Also maybe people are less worried about the direction of the hurricane as generally over land the hurricane decreases in speed?

Most of us are just getting out of bed :-) I'm sure it will pick up in the next couple of hours. I would bet that a lot of our East coast members don't have power now :-(

The slow motion will certainly contribute greatly to an increased impact from this storm. Sustained winds of 40+ (plus gusts) for hours on end, combined with everything being very soggy, will affect things that otherwise may not have had a significant problem...

Could it be that so many are without power today? Sounds reasonable to me!

Also, could be a few outside the strike zone are feeling like me -- don't want to stay on here all the time and crowd the server (and risk it crashing). I check in once in a while, maybe post, then log off. Prefer to keep up on cbs4.com or the cable news stations.

I'd rather leave this place open for you guys to be able to communicate. :)

I suspect there are some exhausted people out there...who spent hours awake last night and might have caught some rest toward morning in spite of this relentless storm.

I think it might have been so quiet in here last night because everyone was just getting burned out. Frances was landfalling, alot of folks are without power, and I know I grabbed a couple of hours sleep because there wasn't much to watch except the radar. (and a couple fo crazy news people)
