Barbados - Lookout!! Ivan
It's been a while since Barbados has had a direct hit, especially my one this strong......Doesn't look good

Last major hurricane to hit Barbados and St Lucia was HURRICANE ALLEN in August 1980
Nobody 24 years of age and younger in St. Lucia has experienced a direct hit
from a hurricane before and this represents just about 40% of the total
population. So the memories of the last one are mainly with the older folks
who describe hurricane Allen as the worst hurricane to affect St. Lucia
since the great hurricane of 1780 which killed over 6000 inhabitants in the
Lesser Antilles. Since Allen, everytime a hurricane was predicted to hit
here it somehow turns northwest and hits the islands to our north. The two
most significant tropical cyclones which have affected us in the last 15
years were tropical storm Debby in 1994 which cause $250M Eastern Caribbean
Dollars worth of damage and killed 4 persons injured 24. It washed away many
bridges and roads and hundreds were left homeless. And then tropical storm
Lili in 2002 which uprooted about 50% of the banana plants on the island
with 60mph winds. But i think this time our luck is running out by the hour.
Ivan is at hurricane strengh and getting stronger and the forecast track has
been virtually the same for the last three days.
BOTTOM LINE IS BARBADOS OR ST LUCIA (or any other island)IS UNPREPARED FOR THIS IMPENDING DISASTER.
I've got a lot of family living on Barbados in the Christchurch area (Southern coast) near Hastings, and I'm very very worried for them.

Abajan...can ya'll evacuate? If not, you better take some serious precautions. I'm worried.
I know of at least 2 other members of this board that are Barbadians (or Bajans for short). Namely Renata and TerryAlly but (curiously) I haven't seen any posts from them lately.
There's really nowhere to "evacuate" to as such, since this is a relatively small island. Luckily, even though it's rather flat when compared to the neighbouring islands, there are many high points where we can go to escape from a storm surge.

Abajan I am praying for you and all the people in that beautiful island. I know with the experience seeing landfalls of big hurricanes like Hugo and Georges it is not pleasant at all.

I hear you, Abajan. Up to 36 hours before Luis hit St. Maarten, the local Mets were in complete denial. Complacency can be a terrible thing especially at responsible levels as it trickles down and the residents and visitors do not take it seriously and are totally unprepared. Fortunately, you know how to prepare and not to take unnecessary chances. Once again, best wishes.
